Whether it's high-fidelity equipment, turntables, or headphones, Technics is selling itself to audiophiles. That messaging of reference-class devices is all over its website. It's no surprise then that the company's latest over-the-ear headphones, the EAH-A1000, using 40mm magnetic fluid drivers, are targeted at the same kind of music lovers. The magnetic fluid driver technology found in Technics' AZ100 wireless earbuds is reimagined for the larger headphones. The result is audio with ultra-low distortion, sparkling clarity, and a wide soundstage. There are a lot of good-sounding headphones on the market, but the Technics A1000 might be the most impressive. I've had a good amount of time with these headphones, even before they were released. I've listened to all kinds of music, podcasts, and video content. They haven't disappointed. I've also put them through different uses, including flying over 5,000 miles with them and testing them in noisy airplane cabins. Here's what you need to know about the A1000 and how they compare to other premium headphones. ## Comparing Technics A1000 to other premium headphones A look under the A1000 ear cushion This year has been packed with new over-the-ear wireless headphones. There's the Sony 1000X The Collexion, Sonos Ace Ultra, Nothing Headphone 1 Pro, and at least a dozen other notable ones. I've tried most of them. The most noticeable thing about the Technics A1000's sound is how clean, clear, and precise it is. Every note is audible and detailed, if you're listening for it. When I'm actively listening, I can hear instrumentation and background sounds I never noticed before. In addition to the magnetic fluid driver are SST (Symmetrical Surround Technology) Edge and a carbon fiber diaphragm technologies. These also contribute to the enhanced audio experience. In contrast, other headphones don't have that same level of definition or clarity. But it's only really obvious when you're comparing the A1000 directly. Other headphones sound great, often lively and detailed, but the A1000 sound a touch better. It's less obvious in isolation, but it's easy to tell when A/B testing them back and forth. ## The comfort of the Technics A1000 supports the listening experience The audio is the killer feature for the A1000 headphones. It's what differentiates them in a sea of other premium headphones. It's not the only interesting aspect, however. The first thing I actually noticed when picking up the A1000 headphones were their squishy cushions and comfortable fit. The headphones are relatively lightweight, weighing 306 grams. The earcups and headband feature leather-like material that's soft and easy to wear for hours. ## ANC is solid, but not the reason to buy these headphones The A1000 get around 45 hours of listening time The A1000 headphones do a fine job of canceling noise and blocking out distractions. I used them on an international flight and wouldn't have a problem using them for travel. However, I have directly compared them to a few other top-end, premium models and, to my ears, they don't block as much noise as some of those do. There aren't stark differences, but they aren't a top performer in this specific area. Instead, the ANC is solid and a good addition that will dampen outside sounds so you can focus better and appreciate the audio. With ANC on, you should get around 45 hours of listening time. That's better than average. I have no complaints about the battery time or how it's lasted in my use. ## I'm not sure if the 3-device connection is needed or not A1000 carrying case Most modern wireless headphones support multi-point connections. They can connect to two different devices and switch when activated on each device. The A1000 supports connecting to three devices at once. This is still a novelty feature. My demo of this feature worked flawlessly, even as I tried to trick it and move between devices rapidly. Do I need these headphones to connect to three devices at once? Probably not. But it's a cool feature. Along the bottom on the right side are media control buttons. Pushing the slider forward and back adjusts the volume. Pushing it in pauses playback. So far, I've found the buttons to be well executed, with the right amount of tactile feel. If there's one thing I don't care for, it's the bland, generic case. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's highly uninspired for $450. It looks and feels like a case you would get with $50 headphones from Temu. ## Should you buy the EAH-Technics A1000 headphones? The Technics A1000 are an exceptional pair of headphones. Their best attribute is the audio quality. I think anyone could benefit from these headphones, which have exceptional clarity and emotional response. But self-proclaimed audiophiles and active listeners will enjoy the A1000 headphones the most. If you're looking for the bad parts, there just aren't many. The biggest downside is that the ANC is only solid, and not exceptional on its own. I wouldn't buy these only for their noise-canceling abilities. But considering the total package, they still might be worth their $450 price point for the right people. They're well executed with tangible comfort and fidelity.
