my brother & his partner are telling me an insane story about this local deity called "st. rat" which is apparently a mosaic relief put up by some queers in seattle. the city kept trying to paint over it, but people would repeatedly just use acetone and remove the paint until the city gave up

For most of the 20th century we effectively had what you might call a Tutelary Democracy where elite institutions effectively weeded out demagogues & extremists, and the broad public chose from among sanitized options. This is theoretically unlovely stated bluntly, but in practice much preferable.
The real counter to "people are too stupid for democracy" is that the elites are by all appearances even stupider. The average person falls for TikTok cheapfakes meanwhile the average elite thinks transgender sports are a tractable policy-based concern and that AI will replace all jobs in 2 years
