Today's LinkedIn post about my little American accessible ebook company.
LinkedIn Keith Snyder Publishing services It just occurred to me that this might not be a bad thing to mention publicly. I don't want my work as a pro-DEIA person in a DEIA-focused company to support the anti-DEIA (and that's the nicest thing I can call it) Trump regime. Typeflow will be keeping all income from our Canadian contracts in Canada, and paying Canadian taxes on it to the Canadian government. Yes, I'm a US person – but Canadian funds will not enter the US. This will begin with the next Canadian job that happens to come in. It will be billed in CAD and the funds will not be converted to USD or cross the border into the US. They will not be used to pay for American services. They might be used to pay for Canadian services, because I can't see any problem with that. My website needs a redesign, for example. What else this will look like, exactly? I don't know, but I don't want my labor funding the people destroying my country and threatening my allies. I'm just trying to stay ethical and this is what I decided. I'm also doubling up my efforts to land US contracts, since that's all I can rely on now for rent, food, utilities, car insurance, and post-apocalypse skin and beauty supplies – so if you're a US publisher looking for ebook conversions and accessibility compliance, or you know one of those US publishers, let's talk, please. Some say we're not supposed to talk about this kind of stuff here, but if you can't violate some LinkedIn norms once in a while during a sociopathic cartoon villain's insane tariff food fight, I mean, really when can you? Screenshot of LinkedIn statement: Accessibility news coming shortly – we were part of a handy thing for publishers that launched over the weekend. But this first: As if you couldn't already tell, Typeflow does not support the new American administration, never has, and never will. We make books. BOOKS! When you design, produce, typeset, convert, enhance a book, you are lending your personal skills and talents to someone else's message, helping them get that message across more effectively. It's not like we're manufacturing widgets here. These aren't doorstops or shelving units. They're BOOKS. There's nothing in them EXCEPT ideas, messages, arguments, and lessons. That's what books ARE! And that's before we even get to ACCESSIBLE EBOOKS, which make it possible for print-disabled people to take in those ideas, messages, arguments, and lessons. Accessibility is the "A" in DEIA, and is being attacked and ripped out of national policy right along with the DEI part. Typeflow stands for free speech. Typeflow also stands for not helping the bad guys. This is not an oxymoron. Everyone should be able to express their ideas – and some of them can go elsewhere for their print designs and ebook conversions. Call it "politics" if you want – I think it's basic humanity – but I'd rather shut the company down and get a fast food job than aid the wrong causes. "Keep politics out of business" means "Keep humanity out of human life." Sorry, no. These are BOOKS. Interesting accessibility thing for publishers coming next.

(Ebooks with audio narration, also called readaloud, readalong, and media-overlay.) This is HUMAN NARRATION, not AI. Recordings of humans reading books aloud. The EPUBulator is the technology that puts the voices into all of Scholastic Books' readaloud ebooks and makes the words on the page light up as they're spoken. It's not the only such technology, but it's the only one that doesn't require you to either be a large publisher or have InDesign expertise, a Mac-only setup, and an understanding of what won't work in different types of ebooks. I led this post by mentioning the EPUBulator's biggest client, Scholastic, but we've done ebooks for News Mag Media, Acme Books, De Marque, and others – including self-publishers. I think it would great for hashtag#audiobook producers, small presses, and hashtag#selfpublishing people (as well as anyone else who needs these, regardless of whether they're on Mac or Windows), if they knew it existed. And BTW, all those commas mean no errors, which means the EPUBulator (the ebook tool I invented for adding media-overlays with word-level highlighting to EPUBs) is still, AFAIK, the best thing that has ever existed for making readaloud fixed-layout kids' ebooks.

My LinkedIn post this morning, where there's a lot of whining about how "politics" isn't appropriate there, most of it from white people, lots of them old, many with the word "retired" on their profiles.
Typeflow, Keith Snyder, Publishing services, now We are now feared, mocked, distrusted, and laughed at by the rest of the world, including our closest allies. Is that still "irrelevant to business," LinkedIn complainers? Do you think maybe this was where all that "America First" stuff was going all along? Ya think? Maybe? Business doesn't exist without politics, and silence and "neutrality" only ever help the bad guys. If you're being silent here but taking real anti-fascist action elsewhere, great. But if you're just complaining here and trying to get politics off LinkedIn, it's very clear where you stand on the current white nationalist Republican coup attempt. And yes, it is very, very obviously that. Be the person your descendants won't be ashamed of.
