#UKIce
We still recall the outcry when the possibility of de-funding UKICE was first floated a few years ago. Obvs everyone recognises that research funds are limited & need to cover diverse needs.

But again today: the loss of UKICE will be felt significantly: they've done a huge service to UK politics.

Thanks for everything you and colleagues at UKICE have done. I've every confidence your amazing work will continue under a different banner very soon.

Weird way to refer to UKICE but enjoy @anandmenon.bsky.social’s cocktails while you can

The end of an era - what a privilege it has been to be even a small part of the UKICE journey. It will remain a hugely valuable resource, capturing such a significant period of time for the UK & EU. We are all indebted to @anandmenon.bsky.social and the UKICE team for what they achieved with this

Very important analysis, especially given the current govt fixation on the auto industry and Made in Europe.

Savour UKICE while you still can!
🚗 "Britain’s decline came in two Brexit stages: years of uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry, before the trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did more lasting damage."

@shepotylo.bsky.social explains how Brexit has damaged the UK car industry.

This is bad news. UKICE was an extraordinarily successful project which took the debate well beyond Brexit. Obviously, the role of UK in a changing Europe remains as relevant as ever. One would have hoped the Labour government understood this and would have found funding to continue UKICE.

This a loss to UK policy. Wake up funding agencies to the fact that Europe is our future but we need to behave with intelligence and insight. Bring back UKICE!

UKICE has been terrific. An example of the kind of work the ESRC should be funding more, in my view.

Im also curious as to what this new huh phoenix-esque institution would like. Broadly the same as UKICE or would be people do it differently?

This is really sad news - UKICE and @anandmenon.bsky.social are a great source of commentary and analysis in the field. Hopefully their work will continue in a different format. All the very best.
And yes, I did screw up. I put my post out too early today then deleted it because I don't know the difference between 12:10am and 12:10pm 🤦🏾 Nice to end as I began.

Echoing so many in lamenting the end of such a great organisation led by @anandmenon.bsky.social.

It was a joy for me to spend three years working with brilliant researchers at UKICE to bring evidence-based research from across the social sciences into public and policy debate.

Very sad news.

#UKICE has been an essential source for making sense of post #brexit law & politics in the UK & beyond.

Well-informed, accessible high-quality research which is so sorely needed in these times.

Hats off to Anand Menon & his great team for their massive achievement.

Anand and UKICE have done remarkable work and made a huge contribution to public life. I'm not sure how he has found the energy to keep going, or the character to avoid going as mad as British politics. Proud to call Anand a friend and look forward to what comes next.

Really sad to see this - UKICE has been a fantastic font of quality and impartial analysis and relevant information on the UK and its EU relations for journalists for a decade - will be massively missed

This is indeed sad - a big loss. The UKICE has been a source of rigorous, fact based, scientific analysis - actual and helpful.

It is bittersweet that the UKICE is ending just when the pendulum in the "Changing UK out of Europe" (I suggested this name a few years back) seems to swing back.

UKICE & @anandmenon.bsky.social have been consistent champions of the value of academic social science research to public debate, & done the hard work making it accessible & getting it out there.

Was a privilege to play a small part in that. This is v sad news, but hope its broader mission lives on

This may be the end of the road for UKICE, but there is much work still to be done. It’s hardly as if there is no longer any need for rigorous, research-based analysis of UK-EU affairs. While it is the end of one chapter, there is plenty more to come. Keep an eye out for news.

The ability for those of us that were interested, especially at the maddest points in 2016-2020, to get actually reliable information in an understandable format was really really helpful. UKICE will be missed. Much to be proud of.

Sad news indeed. UKICE has done brilliant work, helping to ground Brexit debates in fact and evidence, and showing how to communicate social science with both accuracy and elan. Thank you to @anandmenon.bsky.social for your brilliant leadership, and to all the team for your stellar work.

Very sad to hear - was UKICE that prompted me to go to Kings & pick up Euro Studies where I left off decades ago. Thanks for all you & the team have done
October 9, 2026 at 12:11 PM
Take issue with one point here - that UKICE can't claim to have shaped the debate. They have been very important in preventing the worst outcomes from the UK's foolish decision in 2016. Without accessible, well-presented evidence, *worse* things can easily happen.

The past 12 years have been immensely enjoyable. More importantly, we’d like to think that UKICE has played a small part in making the debates about Brexit, UK-EU relations and UK politics better informed. We’re taking this moment to reflect on that and thank some of those who made it possible.

To this Irish/UK economic migrant living in Italy, UKICE was the gold standard for informed analysis and intelligent discourse, throughout a lamentable decade of self imposed UK decline. THANKYOU!
