🌊 With all the changes at NSF and the plan to slash funding by half, I'm thinking of UNOLS all the time. What happens to our world class ocean research fleet without a Division of Ocean Sciences? What will it mean for seagoing research with half the funding?

my family is going to be measurably poorer this summer because my plan to work in the UNOLS fleet has been upended by the chaos in the federal government. unsure about their funding, all the research institutions are pulling back on hiring

My neighbor just took over as director of our marine ops. We run a UNOLS vessel. Our dean is ready for a “lean” time, but it’s going to be impossible to keep going without a boost.

Yeah I saw that. Fortunately the ARF doesn't fall under ONR...UNOLS is managed by NSF (not better :/).

USAP no longer has any vessels. Sikuliaq is a UNOLS vessel usually based at the university of Alaska.

On Friday, #RVEndeavor returned home from research cruise #EN729 to the Georges and Stellwagen Banks! The ship spends ~200 days/year at sea, supporting research and training for scientists from #URIGSO and around the world! Endeavor is owned by the NSF, operated by #URIGSO, and scheduled by UNOLS.

Now let's talk logistics. The floating moorings likely have burn wires or acoustic releases, so they can be recovered. But moorings are BIG. You need at least a regional class UNOLS vessel to recover one...& then how much deck space is there to bring them back? Could they recover 2, maybe 3 at once?

It gets weirder - our REU proposal was initially declined, and then un-rejected and eventually awarded. And this BioOCE grant is being made as a “continuing award” (apparently unheard of at NSF) because we have no idea when our UNOLS ship time will be funded. Grateful regardless!
