#USAID/BHA
A double earthquake in Venezuela. A humanitarian catastrophe is underway.

When I was at USAID BHA, there would be wheels in motion to consider USAR and other critical support.

What will happen now?

Ex USAID BHA here, too. Can validate this. Airdrops are the least effective way to deliver aid. It’s a sign of desperation and failure of many things prior to this point.
Hi, I worked at USAID. 👋

Airdrops are universally acknowledged as probably the worst and least efficient way to get aid to people. You airdrop when you a) want to want to so something but can’t, or b) you don’t want to do anything but want to look like you are.
"Airdrops will not reverse the deepening starvation," UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini wrote on X on Saturday. "They are expensive, inefficient & can even kill starving civilians. It is a distraction & screensmoke."

Earthquake in Afghanistan leaves many dead.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a USAID BHA still that could coordinate some help for people who have suffered so much already?

Just gonna put a copy here in case it doesn’t stay up long

Das Ende von USAID wird Schockwellen auslösen, die wir uns jetzt noch gar nicht genau vorstellen können. Das Ende ganzer globaler Hilfsorganisationen. Save the Children waren zu fast 100% von BHA abhängig…

"At the same time, BHA staff began reporting sudden loss of access to USAID email and information technology (IT) systems."

This is sabotage.

USAID und BHA, die man definitiv wegen der offensichtlichen politischen Einflussnahme im Kontext ihrer Hilfsprogramme kritisch betrachten sollte, waren DAS Standbein humanitärer Maßnahmen.

Danach kommt irgendwann an zweiter Stelle Deutschland. Es gibt kein Standbein mehr…

After being placed on furlough two weeks ago I was officially laid off from my USAID BHA role today.

It has been an honor serving the American people.

Cooking with gas here but maybe put a recreated USAID, at least the bits that used to be BHA, together into the same newly created Agency as FEMA and USWFS. Absolve USAID once and for all of being considered part of State and associate us finally with Agencies that actually do something useful

There's so much going on in this report about the Gaza pier, but this part is particularly interesting.

The UN's World Food Program wanted the pier to at least be built in the north where the people were starving the most. The IDF and USAID overruled that plan.

Former USAID BHA here. Please listen to this. I resonated with this letter so deeply as it mirrors my own experience since Jan 20.

“All we wanted to do is serve.”
Senator Cory Booker enters his 16th hour on the Senate floor for his filibuster.

He gets emotional while reading a letter from a constituent who was laid off from USAID by Elon Musk and DOGE.

Thank you, Cory!

I was in the second group! Thanks for being there. I was USAID BHA until a month ago. Our team was responsible for oversight for $11b of humanitarian aid. All of it is disrupted and lives are being lost.

Please move with all possible urgency.

USAID is a critical aspect of keeping us safe from the impacts of failed and failing states.

BHA feeds the world when no else cares whether those people live or die. Millions of them. It was massively short staffed already, but another 40% capacity cut?

Thousands will die because of this.
Inside Trump’s purge at the agency that saves millions of lives
USAID has become a testing ground for dismantling government agencies, agency employees tell Vox.

500 trucks/day was the daily need pre-war. To halt famine, it’s gunna need to be surged. After the ceasefire in January, for a few days ~600/day were getting in.

(I was USAID BHA working on Gaza till Jan)

As a former USAID BHA employee, thank you and John for reporting on what it meant when we lost our jobs.

Being purged from the work that we loved sucked - but knowing that there were going to be (avoidable, unnecessary) deaths was a horror.

At least 500 personal services contractors at USAID were notified of their termination overnight. The notices were sent via a mass email, which were obtained by CBS News. Many of those affected worked in the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).

I want to point out that the Minneapolis emergency manager comparing the situation to conflict zones she’s worked in is a powerful and rare comparison since EMs don’t usually have that experience.

Turns out she was a humanitarian team lead colleague at USAID BHA. Her comparison is very credible.

I worked at what is now BHA and mapped alongside Ebola responders on the ground - the team leading the efforts that prevented Ebola from spreading globally. USAID lead the international effort that eventually stopped spread locally.

While at BHA, I learned about how significant *just BHA* alone is
I worked at USAID for seven years in Afghanistan, Haiti, Honduras and Pakistan, plus Sudan, Kenya, Sri Lanka and elsewhere remotely. Disaster response, preventing disease, supporting elections, fighting extremism etc. And these Trump/Elon maniacs are trying to shut it down

The USAID "pick up your belongings tomorrow" directive is insane, abusive and wildly illegal.

USAID BHA, furloughed here: sorry man, I feel ya and for all of our colleagues affected. And especially the vulnerable people we all serve
February 13, 2025 at 5:00 AM
You will also find no bigger critics of WFP in particular than now former USAID employees (particularly BHA). They are instituionally incredibly arrogant, entitled, and have remarkably lax risk management, and yet remain the only organization that can do what they do.
June 23, 2026 at 10:03 PM
The report drafted by the USAID/BHA Gaza Response team was very even keeled, not editorialized, fact-based. AtA Sonali Korde refused to formally clear on it, and Administrator Samantha Power refused to stand by her own staff's conclusion when it leaked.

I was USAID BHA. On my first day there, I visited that wall to remember that this work sometimes required courage and sacrifice.

The dishonor of this cannot be waved away. We will remember the service of our colleagues and those who came before.
