First, he has apparently fled the town in South Carolina where he was living, but that hasn't stopped them from proposing an ordinance banning a LOT of kinds of animals from being kept within city limits. USARK is freaking out about it, because that is what USARK does. 2/

I went to my first reptile show in forever recently (and only bought isopod palaces, please clap). USARK is so weird and off-putting!

TBH I wouldn't necessarily link to USARK as a source* even though I generally think they do good work, but this is a decent overview of the issues with blanket incandescent bulb bans.

In reptile-keeping (private homes, zoos, conservation programs, etc.) incandescent bulbs are used as basking lights specifically because they do provide heat and there aren't many safe and appropriate alternatives.

It takes just one asshole to ruin the hobby for everyone. This is why I can’t really support USARK anymore with their stance of basically defending everyone’s right to own every reptile

And they don’t like that they’re being left behind because they refuse to evolve.
Whereas when I interviewed the USARK president for Reptiles, he was over the moon that children are so involved at reptile shows nowadays and that a diverse reptile scene is a stronger one!

Yes, and at least in LA, notably out of sync with the scene. I was there all day because my carnivorous plant club had a booth. There were lots of families, queer folks, people of all genders, everyone having a good time… and then the aggressive, chip-on-shoulder USARK crew.

I'm more an interested observer than a stakeholder, but I'd really like to see USARK adopt a tone and tactic a bit closer to The National Canine Research Council's.

The govt response isn't going to be thoughtful legislation restricting venomous reptiles from private ownership. The ball python and bearded dragon owners are going to be dealing with this.
And unfortunately USARK, the reptile breeders lobby, is full libertarian against *any* restrictions.

The thing about all this that makes me angriest is that because of this guy’s arrogant stupidity, all his animals have to be euthanized. And in turn all anyone is going to think about snake keeping people is that they’re irresponsible dicks.
Some notes from this update on Snakebite Guy: there was an attempt to turn the snakes over to expert facilities before they were euthanized. He's still on a respirator in serious condition. A snake biologist was quoted as saying "His body's probably going to want to shut down relatively soon."

Like, there's still heat emitters for warmth, but basking bulbs were fine, they didn't need to be nerfed and UVB is essential for the health of so many reptiles ugh
