#Unromanticized
Girls is a ridiculously accurate, unromanticized portrait of rich kids moving to the big city. also she did an amazing job setting the tone for Industry, a similarly sickeningly close read of the types of people who get into finance as a profession

The film has great texture, and Altman finds a kindred spirit in French cinematographer Jean Bofferty, who worked a lot with Claude Sautet in the 70s, imbuing his films with a similarly naturalistic beauty. The production design is also amazing, giving the film an unromanticized period authenticity

18. Do you like historical books? Which period?

Yeah! Any period where people had too many interests, not enough sense, and past the turn of the 20th century. Really psyched to finally sit down again with Against The Day, but love noir, weird crime books, and unromanticized history of the 60s & 70s

“The 50s sex culture got it right.”

An opinion from someone for whom the 50s is ancient history & who doesn’t know a damn thing about the unromanticized truth of 50s sex culture.

I’m way older than her & have no more than a book-based understanding of 50s sex culture - but even that ain’t pretty.

The unromanticized description of Nichole's depression funk. Oof. (Funk in more than one sense, I'm guessing. 😭)

I read that and quite a lot of his travel books when I was in my early 20s. He's often comes across as a misanthrope, but I appreciate the unvarnished, unromanticized perspective, even when I don't agree with him

The Criterion Channel has the restoration of Pasolini's neorealist Jesus movie The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, which is great (& was for decades only available in poor video & audio quality). Jesus has a unibrow - that's how unromanticized it is.

And for a specific slice of men (who are typically more hostile in reaction), I suspect the very unromanticized blunt af presentation of the abusiveness hits a little too close to home.

Legit Sopranos and Sergio Leone's Once upon a time in America are the most unromanticized depictions of organized crime out there. It doesn't really get bleaker than those two.

I grew up inside the life they're romanticizing.
It wasn't peaceful.
Memory doesn't edit out the violence.

The GI Joe comic was also my gateway into The ‘Nam, which introduced me to the history of the Vietnam war. It came out at the perfect time where I was too old for GI Joe but still enjoyed military comics. For a Marvel comic it was a very unromanticized depiction of being on the front lines of a war.

Yeah, I doubt that money will be out of the equation when it's so lucrative, it's why I'm realistically like we can incrementally roll shit back til we can hopefully get some good candidates in there to comb out other big issues over time

Honestly wish we had better unromanticized solutions but-

It's definitely not easy. They're both major introverts and workaholics, and don't like being around people. Ayana's avoidance stems from past betrayals and failed relationships, while Jason simply has antisocial personality disorder. I try my best to portray it seriously and unromanticized.

Anyway his nudes (like L'Origine) are wonderful, with (mostly) unromanticized bodies and a better understanding of how boobs slide on a reclining body than most painters of renown lol
