In the crypt of Brandenburg Cathedral (Dom St. Peter und Paul), a remarkable Romanesque stone capital crowns one of the ancient pillars. Carved from sandstone around 1220–1240, it depicts a crowned, winged figure bearing a shield and weapon, iconography associated with St. Michael the Archangel in his role as heavenly warrior. The broad, scaled wings, the circular shield adorned with a rosette, and the commanding posture are hallmarks of medieval ecclesiastical sculpture brought east of the river Elbe by craftsmen from the Magdeburg workshops. These capitals were not originally made for the crypt itself. Scholars believe they were imported pieces, likely procured for the cathedral’s cloister buildings and later relocated into the crypt during the 15th century. Today they are considered the finest ensemble of Romanesque architectural sculpture in the entire state of Brandenburg, an unexpected treasure hidden beneath the cathedral’s nave, bathed in warm light between painted brick vaulting that frames the stone as though it were an altar. The cathedral’s crypt dates back to the first building phase of 1165–1173, making this space and the roughly 800-year-old carvings within it among the oldest and most significant medieval artistic remains in the Brandenburg-Havel region.

I was wandering through the old streets of Brandenburg an der Havel when I almost walked past it without noticing, a weathered stone column standing quietly against a brick wall, older than anything I’d seen that day. It’s next to St. Nikolai, the oldest surviving brick church in the region. They started building it around 1170, and somehow never quite finished. But that unfinished quality gives it a strange, melancholy atmosphere that turns out to be entirely fitting. For hundreds of years, the church was surrounded by a large burial ground where the town’s wealthy merchants and civic dignitaries commissioned some truly spectacular grave monuments. When the churchyard was cleared in the 1950s to make way for a public park, someone had the good sense not to destroy them. Instead, the finest pieces were moved here, arranged along the outer walls of the church, where you can still stumble across them on an ordinary morning walk. The column stopped me in my tracks. At the top, a skull and crossbones carved in stone staring out at the street. Below it, a tablet that once bore someone’s name, worn now to near-illegibility by three centuries of wind and rain. And running down the shaft, a carving of draped fabric, soft and flowing despite being solid stone, representing the burial shroud, the final veil between the living and the dead. The column itself is broken, intentionally so. A life cut short, rendered in stone. The whole thing speaks a language that baroque artists understood deeply: that wealth fades, beauty crumbles, and none of us are here for long. Standing there in the morning sun, it was hard not to feel the weight of that message.
