#Uplands
Call me Mr Suspicious, but something tells me PM Burnham will push back on this strongly (behind the scenes). We do not want the Abu Dhabis to cancel their yummy billions of investment in the Sunlit Brexit Uplands, as they have already threatened.

Better to corrupt football and look away.

People tend to forget the industrial scale nonsense that was told in 2016 (‘easiest deal in history’, ‘they need us more than we need them’, ‘sunlit uplands’, etc)

10 years later its all turned to dust. Who defends Brexit now?
October 3, 2026 at 11:14 AM
agree. and it's not that hard to imagine the stay out campaign somewhat crumbling - being constantly forced to confront the lies they told in 2016 and defend the subsequent reality is going to be tough for them. in 2016 they could sell mystic uplands, not this time

Fun fact: It is a loop of about 300 kilometres (190 mi), from Reykjavík into the southern uplands of Iceland and back, and includes the most visited attractions in Iceland.

Imagine if they upzoned all of Uplands. Or if the old CFB Rockcliffe got kept as PMQs.

Just an idea. Get them to build loads of new prisons first. We’re going to need lots of cells after all the fraud and corruption hearings expected.
Brexit, Fifa, Führage, Boris, F1.
Lots of sunny uplands agricultural properties for sale since #Brexit induced farm bankruptcies.

I keep seeing posts from people who claim 'we had brexit in name only' 'they' blocked a real brexit', 'we haven't yet done a proper brexit'.

I guess they are waiting for the unicorns to bring their special brexit from the sunlit uplands...
October 2, 2026 at 9:02 AM
I agree wholeheartedly. But I do worry about the media which played a huge part in 2015 in amplifying the lies told by the leave campaign about sunlit uplands and everone being wealthier and 'free'.
Farage is about to do that all again, and gullible people believe it. 😬

Braithwaite: touts OB biodiversity. Uplands park is a "jewel." agrees with Starkweather and Sweeney on allowing zoning flexibility to save trees. ID issues around trees sooner in design process. [why hasn't council she's on already done this?]
October 2, 2026 at 3:32 AM
Green: lists a bunch of orgs OB belongs to. Acknowledges community volunteers that work for free in Uplands/Bowker/Climate Force. [is her plan to just rely on volunteers to keep the green spaces alive?] peters out with "let's save the trees."
October 2, 2026 at 3:32 AM
Moore: acknowledges friends of uplands park/bowker creek. hours of volunteerism / revival of park. would like to see public and private lands protected. build within envelope of tree canopy [gets applause] hydrology reports should be required, especially big developments like by Landsdowne.
October 2, 2026 at 3:32 AM
Murdoch: yes, very big issue but seems to scoff at we can't just 'pick up park land' as Holland suggests. Mentions Uplands [and gets applause]. We replant if we can and require it on private property. managing infill zoning. maybe limit 1-2 buildings per lot.

"Ten years after the referendum, the sunlit uplands promised by the Brexiters have proven to be a total fiction. Instead, Britain finds itself battling an economic and geopolitical storm."

Now the big mistake here is that Farage can’t bullshit us about sunny uplands and sovereignty again because we have had 10 years of that already and it’s shit.

What’s worse for him is that we also remember the cunt that sold it to us and the wankers that were in power and gave us the Brexit deal.

It’s very much down to us Greens on the council in Manchester for pushing this up the agenda and highlighting the alternative that Manchester trusts have developed.

Also, British tech workers stand to hugely benefit from a drive toward digital sovereignty. And I’m so here for it. Sunlit uplands!
Now this is what take back control looks like.

And Manchester has created a data and logistics health stack that doesn't rely on Palantir and superior to it. No reason why this can't happen across all UK public services.

For security. And frankly decency.

I don't see how. Brexit is now our - shitty, apparently still swamped with migrants - reality, not his bullshit 'sunlit uplands' fantasy.

Farage either has to justify his Brexit as is, or promise his 'new, improved' version would be better - and why would anyone believe him *this* time?

These aren’t contemporary claims; the video shows Hannan back in 2016, mis-selling Brexit to the nation as part of the lawbreaking Vote Leave campaign. He was inviting us to picture what the UK would be like in 2016, ten years after leaving the EU. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
