Female Wards 9 and 10 of the Kirkbride Block at Callan Park, Rozelle: daylight on dusty floorboards under peeling plaster. When the Sydney College of the Arts moved in in 1996, these two wards were left out of the reuse, which is why they look like this.

Two belts ran through this conveyor gantry from the raw coal bunker at Morwell: the left to the briquette factory, the right to the power station. Coal from the open cut next door had too much silica for briquettes, so the factory ran on Yallourn coal, railed across.

At the end of this pit road in the Eveleigh Paint Shop sits trailer T 4279, a timber suburban car that entered traffic on 22 September 1913. Widened and converted to an electric trailer in 1926, it is the only widened timber car of its group to survive intact.

Box Hill Brickworks closed in August 1988 with its plant standing, and in 1989 was heritage listed as a rare, unusually intact early 20th-century brickmaking plant. Inside, brick piers rise beside a tall conical steel bin and yellow-railed walkways, all under graffiti now.

The Grandstand Motel stood on the Hume Highway at Warwick Farm, two storeys of brick rooms behind iron balustrades. When I rang to ask in 2018, there was a room: $80 for the night, or $60 for a half day. It has since been demolished.

Somebody bricked up the window years ago and then walked away.
Moss, graffiti and cracked concrete decided to finish the job properly.This wall has more personality than most renovated façades.
