Could this be the most important building in London this century? I think so! It’s a return to using stone structurally to build a 10 storey tower and hugely reducing the carbon impact of building. By Groupwork and Webb Yates engineers, Petra Heights on Finchley Road is monumental in so many ways 🧵

A parade of shops housed in an early 20th Century terrace is on the left and next to these is a block composed of two towers constructed in a square grid pattern using beams of red coloured stone. Next to this spectacular building is a boring ‘council architect’ late 29th century residential block.

Sicilian (Etna) basalt is also used in the building. The whole surface is coated with a wash that has oxidised the surface producing a skim of red ochre. I love this building and it’s the future! Build with stone! #urbangeology
View looking up the north side of the building which shows the minimal finish on the blocks. Some beams have been honed to a smooth surface, others still show the channels cut to house the explosives used to split block in the quarry. Half way up the building is a beam with minimal dressing. Another vertical perspective looking up the building.

This is the Black Castle (Arnos Castle) in Bristol built c. 1750 from blocks of cast slag from copper smelting works. Visited by Horace Walpole, it doesn’t get more gothic than this! And they serve snakebite and black #urbangeology #gothic #18thCentury

ホテルに戻ってから写真の右下に写ってるのはサンゴの化石かな？と気付いて翌朝また見に行ったんだけど、小さな厚歯二枚貝の集積でした。苦手な人もいそうなのでラベル付ける。

松本市にあるヤマダドレスギャラリーの外壁に厚歯二枚貝の化石を発見。というか実は8年前に見つけていて、今回は出張に合わせて再訪。うーん、やっぱり他では見たことない石材だなぁ。

この黒更紗？な石材はかつて札幌電通ビルに使われていたというものと同じじゃないかな。今は大通りビッセの1階に移設されています。

親の用事で子供の頃によく行ってい五反田TOCを再訪しました。昔は何もないビルだと思ってたけど、四十数年ぶりに改めて観察すると‥‥これ国産大理石🇯🇵じゃないかな？岩手県産の叢雲と岐阜県産の黒更紗？どちらにもウミユリの化石が入ってました。

九段会館テラスに再訪。うーん、階段のオウムガイはこの4体だけかなぁ。薄暗い場所なんだけど、化石のある柱には窓から陽が差していました。

品川グランパサージュには広範囲にポルトガル産石材モカクリーム🇵🇹が使われていました。腕足類やウニの殻・棘の化石を発見。お昼時だったのでどこも混んでたなー。

A fabulous day out in Dunwich yesterday with my fellow wall-gamer @timholtwilson.bsky.social and @discoverdunwich.bsky.social. A great turn out and lots of enthusiasm for the many and various lithologies in Dunwich’s medieval buildings
