THE BIG ONE:

The left has kept Paris.

Emmanuel Gregoire has won a 3-way runoff, beating conservative challenger Rachida Dati. Gregoire is from the center-left PS, the party of the retiring incumbent Anne Hidalgo (well known among US urbanists).

#Bluesky is so weird.

You can post a video of an all electric train running through the heart of Palo Alto, California, and a bunch of cool urbanists and train lovers will comment “Hell yeah”

The idea that ”urbanists want to ban cars and force everyone to bike everywhere” comes from a car-centric mindset (assuming everyone must rely on one mode and urbanists just want to swap cars for bikes).

There are zero cities in the world that I know of where you have to bike to function.
In a world of rising populations and growing cars, every cyclist is one less variable in the traffic equation

Why did urbanism (and to some extent planning) became part of culture wars and attacked by the right? A series of possible explanations:
- Cities breed liberalism
- Urbanists use climate action arguments
- Cities are more welcoming to diversity than other places
- Urbanists can be seen as elitist

A New Year’s appeal to Bluesky urbanists. A key reason I first joined that other site was to follow urbanists from around the world posting about interesting things in their cities. Public art. Public spaces. Architecture. Whatever. I’d love to see more of that here. Cities inspiring other cities!

downwardly mobile gentrifiers want riding the subway to be Cool, urbanists want the least cool person you know to prefer riding the subway to owning a car

Car enthusiasts 🤝 Leftists 🤝 Urbanists
"We must destroy the dealerships"
Car dealers are a reliable and influential power bloc for Republicans. Today on Assigned, @emarcadia.bsky.social writes that Democrats should politicize them and pursue them and other bastions of Republican power as relentlessly as Republicans have pursued the Democratic coalition.
Consider the Car Dealerships - Assigned Media
Republicans have long waged war against Democratic constituencies. What if we turned the tables?
