Kumlien's type Gull showing well at Uyeasound today. Quite a dark, well marked individual. Need to do a bit more reading on separating them from Theyers, I think! 🤔 #YellBirding #RareBirdsUK

Also on Unst today at Uyeasound. The Kumlien’s/Thayer’s gull, 1st winter male Common Scoter and Woodcock along with c500 Long tailed Ducks, in the snow. The sound made the spectacle even better.

3rd April back on Unst with a bit of a goose fest.
6 Taiga Bean geese at Ordaal with 6 Jackdaws in the same area. 3 Greenland Whitefronts at Buness, another single was seen at Uyeasound, single Pinkfoot at Buness as well.Migrant Song Thrush at Uyeasound & the LTD’s always good. #birdingshetland

An elusive little bunting at Skaw and a near adult glaucous gull at Uyeasound was the best bird wise today #Unst #UKBirding 2+ minkie whales in Haroldswick gave excellent views and attracted a bit of a crowd.

Well after 4 days of trying I finally managed to see the Bonaparte’s Gull at Uyeasound, Unst.
Flew in late afternoon for about 5 minutes. Also present was the 2nd winter Glaucous Gull and nearby 2 Tundra Bean geese. #birdingshetland

Well after 4 days of trying I finally managed to see the Bonaparte’s Gull at Uyeasound, Unst.
Flew in late afternoon for about 5 minutes. Also present was the 2nd winter Glaucous Gull and nearby 2 Tundra Bean geese. #birdingshetland

Shetland at its best: It started at Uyeasound where I found my 3rd self found & first autumn Rosefinch, followed by a very grey-presumed Acredula Willow Warbler. On to Norwick where I had improved views of the Bluethroat I found last week and finish by finding my 3rd ever Corncrake at Skaw! 😀

Nice to finally visit Shetland for the first time last week! Mostly quiet bird-wise until I stumbled across a cracking Red-throated Pipit on the beach at Norwick, Unst on my last day. Other highlights were great views of Otter and some rare plants on the Keen of Hamar. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

Nice to finally visit Shetland for the first time last week! Mostly quiet bird-wise until I stumbled across a cracking Red-throated Pipit on the beach at Norwick, Unst on my last day. Other highlights were great views of Otter and some rare plants on the Keen of Hamar. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

Today's vikingism: the Up Helly Aa galley sheds of Shetland. Found in communities across the islands, they act as centres of operations for 'squads' as they prepare for local celebrations of the fire festival, including the construction of a galley that is set aflame as part of the festivities.

Now home from a fab week in Shetland. The scenery is stunning and I made it to the northern tip of Britain's most northerly inhabited isle, Unst! I did a couple of planetarium shows for the National Space Academy camp. And I saw otters!
