Guys produce less oxytocin but vasopressin which bonds us - the signal just dulls if we date a lot

1) 🇸🇪 A Swedish study of 111 ME/CFS patients found reduced levels of vasopressin, a hormone that regulates water retention.

Low vasopressin could lead to low blood volume and some of the orthostatic symptoms that ME/CFS patients report.

Why does drinking alcohol make you dehydrated? 🍸💧

Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, a hormone that helps kidneys reabsorb water via aquaporins, so you lose more fluid as urine, causing that familiar dehydrated feeling

GLP-1, GLP-2, glucagon, somatostatin, motilin, ghrelin, angiotensin II, oxytocin, and vasopressin are all peptides! They all do completely different things!

vasopressin challenge: this group evaluated 1U bolus of vasopressin to evaluate patient responsiveness

I love this for a few reasons:

[1] allows vaso to have rapid onset (rather than taking 30-60 min to build up)

[2] we can get a sense of whether the vaso is helping

Whole continents just swimming in stress hormones. Fight-or-flight for breakfast, gambling-win rewards for lunch, alcohol-mediated vasopressin-suppression for dinner. You wanted peptides? Here’s your peptides.

4) With such imbalance, one would expect vasopressin to be increased. It's produced by neurons in the hypothalamus in response to increase plasma osmalility. The receptors are highly sensitive: only a slight rise, should lead to an increase in vasopressin.

Our findings suggest that deficiency of vasopressin secretion is a fundamental measurable part of the disease mechanisms, which may underlie a number of symptoms in ME/CFS, including the common complaint of orthostatic intolerance.

Who here knows about the fun little hormone called

VASOPRESSIN

???

This little gem plays a role in regulating body fluid.

When dehydrated, vasopressin production increases, conserving water.

It’s a SURVIVAL MODE hormone.

Seriously dehumanizing: Researcher studies a drug’s effect on monkeys and then declares: “The most important implication of these findings to me is that vasopressin treatment may be useful in managing similar behavioral [traits] in people with autism.”

Vasopressin boosts sociability in solitary monkeys
Inhaling the hormone did not increase aggression in unsociable rhesus macaques and appears to help the animals remember faces and reciprocate friendly behaviors.

A fun 🧪 fact as we approach New Years celebrations:

The reason you need to pee more when drinking is because alcohol inhibits vasopressin. Like all hormones, vasopressin has a lot of roles. One thing it does (under normal circumstances) is prevent your kidneys from sending urine to the bladder(1/4)

Oh and please don't send me replies like "so why am I always stressed". Cortisol isn't the only stress hormone, dummy! You also have adrenaline, noradrenaline, catechol, vasopressin and dopamine.......... well you don't have that one......

New research finds people with ME/CFS have a striking deficiency in vasopressin - a hormone that helps the body retain water.

This could explain common symptoms like constant thirst and dizziness upon standing.

Let's break down the findings.
