Tax exemptions on unearned income in the UK are pretty formidable. Simple schemes such as VCTs and EISs enable wealthy people to reduce their tax burdens hugely. In principle, the schemes are open to everyone, but in practice (and for various reasons) only the wealthy use them in size.

Thought I’d share this as it’s not something that I see being mentioned by Fintwits/Bluefins. Over a number of years I’ve drip fed some cash into VCTs. The below is a sample of the returns over that time frame including divis. One is the gross investment, the other allows the outset 30% tax refund.

OTOH the returns VCTs deliver were pretty grim last I looked - on avg better off putting the money into a global tracker etf and paying the CGT. Same for AIM/IHT (now reduced benefit too)
