In a liberal society built on individual responsibility we should (probably) avoid assigning collective blame on communities based upon the crimes of individuals.

Torah keeps reminding us that survival is not enough and continuity matters too and this week’s Vayechi Parshah illustrates the point.

I’ve been thinking about the difference between Joseph and Jacob.

Joseph knows how to survive in Egypt while Jacob knows how to keep peoplehood alive in exile.
