Back to one of my regular moans about democracy measurement - present bias. According to VDEM the UK's 'level of liberal democracy' is now lower than any time since 1945 - a period of time in which business owners and graduates had multiple votes and during which the Troubles occurred. WRONG.

My prompt was literally: a) access Vdem b) check our cases c) study them with Vdem using R-code d) provide me the code to produce a .html file. Then integrate to your liking the justification in our Appendix using the .tex file of our paper.

If VDEM and others (Polity / Freedom House) etc want people to trust their measures don't contain the bias of the academics who constructed them, they need to make sure that their indices pass a basic 'is that really likely?' question.

Good to hear an update on Helene disaster response from VDEM, FEMA, and law enforcement. I’m fighting tooth and nail to get a robust disaster assistance package passed before the end of the year so we have the resources we need for Virginia’s long term recovery.
