One of our pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis) reflecting in the pond this evening.

(And one of the garden poop culprits back left.)

A small, odd-shaped pool of dark water fills the bottom of a leaf-filled earthen basin, with several charred and rotting logs leaning against its sides. A small tree and a utility wire are reflected in the surface of the pond. In the distance at left, a black and white cat sits by a house.

The Davis Democratic Club gets a lot of it original content to post from Frank Maurer. These are his poetic thoughts about vernal pools and housing development in Davis, CA. To see the entire poem: quailridgelt.org/vernalpools....
To Be or Not to Be, That is the (Original) Question; To Destroy or Not to Destroy, That is the (Present) Question. A city wishes to extend its borders once again. To do this, many challenges must be met. If flood control channels are constructed incorrectly, This will cause numerous biological disasters. Plans must be followed which are ethical and correct. Once this project is completed, it must demonstrate wise planning. Of course, a new development must consider increased traffic. An important biological consideration is vernal pools-- Special places where flora and fauna have coexisted for centuries, And a unique creature which has survived in this environment. The Vernal Pool Tadpole Shrimp is well-adapted for these habitats. Their morphology with body and tails are so sweet to behold. To plow them under, they would have no other chance. Do we need to build in completely inappropriate locations? Is there a way to compromise--human and shrimp? They are at our mercy. We alone will make the difference. Devote some time to aiding another creature. They lived here long before we entered the world stage. It is only right that we consider others living with us. There is a development that threatens the future of a vernal pools area in Davis, CA. This is Frank Maurer's poetic view of the project. The poem can be found at quailridgelt.org/vernalpools....

Gotta love #vernalpools. This, in the back of my neighbor's yard. She has a duck pair she calls Fred and Ethel that have made their 4th year appearance, this year showing up on the same day as in 2025.

A purplish-gray salamander with bright yellow spots crawls toward the camera across a pair of pale hands. The fingers are slightly pink with cold and under the hands leaf litter is visible in a shallow pool. The scene is lit artificially and there are deep shadows. “Just 25 years ago, the ‘vernal pool’ habitat concept was hardly even found in the lexicon of natural resource professionals in the mid-Atlantic region, much less known by the general public.

“We can’t save what we don’t understand and value . . . .”

Spring Pool by Robert Frost: These pools that, though in forests, still reflect The total sky almost without defect, And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver, Will like the flowers beside them, soon be gone, And yet not out by any brook or river, But up by roots to bring dark foliage on. The trees that have it in their pent up buds To darken nature and be summer woods - Let them think twice before they use their powers To blot out and drink up and sweep away These flowery waters and these watery flowers From snow that melted only yesterday.

Hot off press. Resolution not great . . .but timing was right. Largest concentration of fairy shrimp ( #Eubranchipus) I’ve ever seen. These are likely E. vernalis, the only one of 2 Massachusetts species not listed. Many males; no brood pouches. Early season? March 26, 2025.
