Der Wiener Musikverein ist ein Konzertgebäude am Musikvereinsplatz in Wien. Das Neorenaissancegebäude wurde 1867 bis 1870 durch die Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien von Theophil Hansen errichtet. Mit dem Großen Saal besitzt es einen der besten Konzertsäle der Welt. Seit 1941 findet hier das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker statt.

Born 1961 in Wels, Upper Austria. Before joining Vienna's leading orchestras, Mayr held positions in several distinguished ensembles: ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (1981–1983) Chamber Orchestra of Europe (1983–1985) Vienna Symphony Orchestra (1985–1987) Principal Double Bass of the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich (1987–1989) This progression was exceptionally rapid and established him as one of the most promising young bassists in Europe. In 1989, Herbert Mayr joined the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera as a principal double bassist. Since membership in the Vienna Philharmonic is traditionally drawn from experienced members of the State Opera Orchestra, he subsequently became a member of the Philharmonic as well. Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra regard him as one of the leading representatives of the modern Viennese double bass tradition. For decades he has occupied a crucial role in shaping the famous Viennese orchestral sound, whose bass foundation is renowned for its warmth, depth, clarity, and flexibility. He will be enjoying his well-deserved retirement in September 2026.
