Crossings originating as far west as Normandy remain unusual

A small migrant boat was heading towards the United Kingdom after spending almost 23 hours at sea, according to Sky News. The dinghy reportedly departed from the Normandy coast on Monday, near the village of Vierville-sur-Mer, west of Bayeux. A French coastguard vessel monitored the boat after its departure, while ship-tracking data indicated that it had approached the Channel boundary line. The people on board were taken aboard two Royal National Lifeboat Institution vessels before being transferred to HMC Vigilant, a UK border-control vessel. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said that HM Coastguard had responded to a report of a small boat in the Channel, south of the UK’s central southern coast. Rescue vessels, supported by an HM Coastguard aircraft, were sent to collect the occupants and transfer them safely to Border Force. Authorities said that departures from as far west as Normandy are unusual. Earlier in the month, another dinghy reportedly travelled from the Cherbourg area to waters near the Isle of Wight, prompting protests in Portsmouth. Officials said at the time that the journey appeared to be an isolated incident rather than evidence of a new crossing pattern. The migrants are expected to be transferred to Border Security Command for detention, security checks and processing. The incident follows the arrival of another migrant boat at Folkestone, Kent, which reached the shore without being intercepted. Sky News reported that around 17,480 people had arrived in the UK by small boat so far in 2026, a figure 46% lower than at the same point in the previous year. The report was published as a developing story, with further details expected.

The dinghy is understood to be approaching the Channel boundary line, according to ship-tracking data, and appears to have set off close to the village of Vierville-sur-Mer, west of Bayeux.
