#genealogy Did any of your relatives fall on a sample line in the 1950 US Federal Census? If so, have you recorded that extra information in your research notes or genealogy program? Image headers can be hard to read, so I like to read the instructions.

#genealogy IPUMS USA is my favorite site 'quick' place to read Enumerator instructions for 1850 onwards. You can also find documentation on the US Census Bureau's website. usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/t...

#GenHour The most reliable place to find the instructions for the US Census is IPUMS (from 1850 onwards). The US Census Bureau also has the instructions, but they keep rearranging the site and breaking bookmarks.

You're very welcome! I love digging in to questions like this for other people because I very often discover things I need to know for my own work.

If you want to know what's on any given census form, IPUMS also has info on questions from 1850 onwards. usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/t...

Also, if these are town names, it might not matter, but for the 1920 Census, the instructions are to record the pre-war names for birthplaces (for person, father & mother).

In case you need the enumerator instructions, you can get them at the US Census Bureau website or via IPUMS USA.👇

The enumerator doesn't always follow instructions but the child was supposed to be listed even if not there and marked as Absent. Instructions from IPUMS USA (also available via Census Bureau website).

#GenHour Cases like that always send me scurrying back to the instructions so I can remind myself what the enumerator was supposed to do. (I use ipums.org and the Census Bureau website to find documentation.)

The year 1900 is very specific. My first guess was that this claim was drawn from 1900 federal census data. But the 1900 census form did not include any questions about income or wealth. Here is what it did ask:

I generally go here to view the questionnaires and instructions for every census year. Can you share where they were deleteing them from? That would be infuritating!
