A roll/volutus cloud is one of two main types of arcus clouds; precisely it is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped type of arcus cloud.

Roll clouds usually appear to be "rolling" about a horizontal axis and move without changing speed or shape.

Sunset surprise. It was right in the valley. For a bit of perspective, the mountains just behind the roll cloud are the 14,000 ft Collegiate Peak range. Glancing out the window often brings a new delight.
Also sat on the front porch in a crazy thunderstorm.

These are typically associated with severe thunderstorms, but they can also form in peaceful air over water/land interfaces as in this photo from Maldonado, Uruguay.

The cold air sinks, forcing the warm, moist air into a sort of atmospheric wave.

When detached from a storm, they're "roll clouds."
