The elections were designed to screw over the Communist Party, which used to be huge, as much as possible. So not only do you have the two-round system to discriminate against anyone at the extremes of the Overton Window, but the rules were such that the Socialists could stay in and votesplit.

not to be pessimistic but we have no proportional representation (unlike France) and multi-party votesplit (unlike the US). the system is very heavily in favour of the conservatives. ever since the reform party merged with the PCs

But we do this exact same anti-harper/scheer/otoole/pollievre votesplit dance every single election.
And Estabrooks was by far the strongest ndp candidate since McGowan (and she's much stronger).
But her results were the worst since 2008.
Maybe it's 100% Trump, but I bet there's a Singh backlash.

Randy was toxic this time, but for the past 3 he was mostly harmless, and the votes were still extremely close. (and for 2 of those the votesplit sites all said liberal).

I’m no fan of Singh, but all this talk from LPC and NDP voters about how they’re going to beat the other’s candidates is just stupid. You guys are are all going to votesplit and the CPC will go right up the middle. Stop being partisan, start being strategic. YOU HAVE A COMMON ENEMY.
Which is because be have other established parties besides to two big ones, mean you're more likely to votesplit. Which has been really frustrating when you feel like you want punish hubris or bad governing but it often leads to the greater evil winning out.

They won in ‘15 because of a votesplit between the PCs and Wildrose. PCs and Wildrose’s combined numbers were on par with the UCP’s results from ‘19 + ‘23.
I should also mention that the NDP had a higher % of the vote in ‘23 than in ‘15. See? Doesn’t matter when your opponent has 50%+ support
