🇩🇪 Volkswagen Type 3 1600 E Fastback The Volkswagen Type 3 was introduced in 1961 as VW's answer for motorists who wanted the dependability and air-cooled engineering of the Beetle, but with more space, comfort and a more modern appearance. The stylish Fastback joined the Type 3 family during the 1960s, sitting alongside the Notchback and practical Variant estate. Its sweeping rear roofline gave it a completely different character from the Beetle and helped make it one of Volkswagen's most distinctive designs of the era. This example is the 1600 E, the "E" referring to Volkswagen's electronic fuel-injection system on fuel-injected versions. The Type 3 became particularly significant in automotive history because VW was among the early manufacturers to introduce electronic fuel injection to a mass-produced family car. Behind the rear wheels sat Volkswagen's familiar 1,584cc air-cooled flat-four engine. Unlike the Beetle, however, the Type 3 used a much flatter engine arrangement. This allowed Volkswagen to provide useful luggage space above the engine as well as a luggage compartment at the front — making the Type 3 surprisingly practical for an air-cooled rear-engined car. By the time production ended in 1973, more than 2.5 million Type 3s of the various body styles had been produced. And this particular Fastback certainly isn't hiding its 1970s character! 💛 The bright yellow paint, classic chrome, period styling and unmistakable sloping rear end make it a car that's very difficult to walk past without taking another look.
