Left a wedding to go operate #ARRLFD at W1AW. Might have been the only person working 75 meters in heels. #amateurradio #hamradio

In 1995, I had the chance to visit and operate at W1AW, the iconic American Radio Relay league station in Newington, CT. Also known as the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station, it was a true highlight of my ham radio journey.

W1AW/3 in Delaware and W1AW/7 in Idaho are in the log. Finding a Delaware whom I could hear and who could hear me turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected. Idaho, on the other hand, I got on the first call.

W1AW/4 in Florida and W1AW/1 in Massachusetts are in the log on the first night of operation. I don't generally work each state's operations more than once, but this evening I decided it would be fun to get 3 modes. So I worked /1 on FT8 and CW and /4 on SSB. Just for fun.

Look mom, no cw filter!! 😀

I hacked #Yaesu FT-818ND with #SOTABEAMS 817 SSB/CW filter module. Result, it just like having 500hz cw filter. Eliminate the nearby strong W1AW cw signal 500hz above 14.047Mhz completely. So, oh yeah... no need the stinky filter. 👍

Worked W1AW/8 in Michigan & W1AW/5 in Texas this evening. Back to Olympics on TV. This year no sob story vignettes that used to annoy me with USA TV shows of Olympics. Greater variety of sports shown too. I who can’t stand up on ice skates & wouldn’t get in a bobsled for a million $$ love to watch.

That's one of the operating positions at W1AW at ARRL HQ. I operated there on June 4, 2025. One of my bucket list items has been checked off!
