# Hacktoberfest Submission: WildGuide Local _This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass_ ## What I Built **WildGuide Local** is a privacy-first, offline AI companion designed to turn your smartphone or laptop into a field guide for the great outdoors. It helps users identify plants and animals and provides regional ecological advice without requiring an internet connection. The goal is to lower the barrier to nature exploration by providing instant, local knowledge, while explicitly encouraging users to "put the screen away and observe" after getting their answers. It's built for hikers, gardeners, and nature enthusiasts who want the power of AI without the tether of a data plan or the privacy concerns of cloud-based APIs. ## How I Built It WildGuide Local is built entirely on an open-source, local-first stack: * **Local Inference** : Powered by **Ollama** , allowing the app to run heavy models on consumer hardware. * **Vision Model** : Uses **llava** for image recognition and species identification. * **Reasoning Model** : Uses **Llama 3** for generating ecological advice and interpreting local data. * **RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)** : Implemented using **LangChain** and **ChromaDB**. This allows users to ingest their own regional ecological data (frost dates, local laws, native species lists) into a local vector store, making the AI an expert on their specific backyard. * **Frontend** : A clean, tabbed interface built with **Streamlit**. ## Why Does Open Innovation Matter? Open innovation is the heartbeat of WildGuide Local. By using open-weight models and local inference, we achieve three things that a closed API couldn't: 1. **True Offline Capability** : In the deep woods, there is no 5G. A closed API is useless in the very environment where this tool is needed most. 2. **Absolute Privacy** : Nature exploration is personal. By keeping images and queries on-device, users don't have to trade their privacy for knowledge. 3. **Community Customization** : Because the RAG pipeline is open, the community can share "Regional Knowledge Packs" (JSON/Text files) that others can drop into their local instance to immediately make their guide an expert on a specific National Park or biome. ## Prize Categories * Local AI / Edge Computing * Environmental Impact / Nature * Open Source Contribution

I'm making space for them in a lot of my decks. Deathtouching mana dork with adorable art? Yes please! Gonna join Tender Wildguide (possum with baby) and Twitching doll (Cute cat doll, def don't look too close) as my budget even-mana dorks

Although largely replaced by the Britain's Spiders WILDGuide, it's still as really useful additional source of reference. Dick's very significant contribution to arachnology is rather undervalued.

Today's Christmas shopping for arachnologists has to be our @princetonupress.bsky.social photographic WILDGuide to 'Britain's Spiders', covering the 'macro' spiders of Britain together with some of the micros (Money spiders/Linyphiidae) that are easily ID'd in the field:

Absolutely criminal that the only possum in the #Bloomburrow set is this guy, as adorable as he is.

Ayoooo I love MtG and work at a FLGS! I even wore my fursuit to the Bloomburrow prerelease :3 Also, had my partner doodle my sona as the Tender Wildguide token.

We had a local irl friend puzzle night today, and while we didn't finish the puzzle in one night this time, I did treat myself to some trading cards cuz we meet up at a local geek card game shop and I got me some mtg booster packs. Didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised with my pulls!

The next and final destination was... Me! I over skewed ramp here pretty bad, so I reigned that in by swapping some low impact ramp spells into some bigger late game fatties, and the new DFT Dino Lord... Also I have @ryinzana.bsky.social's alter of Ghalta now co leading the CZ with the FDN version.

@powrdragn.bsky.social I took your Selesnya Cage deck and went 5-1. Then I -1 WIldguide, -1 Evangelist, -2 Toby and +2 Brightglass, +1 Aetherspark, and +1 District Mascot and went 52-21 (currently Mythic 395).

I would just like to thank you for the orig idea and always fostering creativity in MTGA

Not sure if genius or other. Tender Wildguide is interesting. I have a friend that has been raving about it in Selesnya Gearhulk ("I'm going get Tender Wildguide banned" 🤣).

i feel good about this little haste chunk.

ramp section is probably going to be re-evaluated, considering i am exploring a little Extra Lands package to make Loot draws more actionable.

meat category for things i will almost certainly be running.

ignore the expensive variants, i'm windowshopping.

For the #MTGA crowd, a nearly mono-green counter-killer deck called "Count Your Days." Great curve, good removal, fun to play. Either get to flatten your opponent or burn them to death with nuclear fire

Good so far up to Diamond. I lose with other decks up there but this keeps climbing

Deck 31: GW March Cage

March of the World Ooze is game-ending but costs 6. The solution? Don’t pay for it! Collector’s Cage is up to the usual nonsense with the usual suspects and Tender Wildguide helps cast March and Overlord in the “fair” games.
