The disk in Julian’s hands felt light as a feather. He spun it on his finger as he walked down the hall. Fumbled to catch it when it wobbled off, almost hitting the ground. A disk this old had to be pretty delicate. This was an item of the 2000s. Old and obsolete.

And I can tell it’s bad by the way Rufus cannot look me in the eye, his voice trying not to break. I can also see the veins pulsating in his hand where he’s trying not to break his god damn phone in anger, with that he’s doing his best to conceal behind a face made from chiselled stone.

Like a fool, the boy knocked on the door. The sour scent of his fear perfumed the air. She scuttled further backward into the hut’s only room, gnawed the last piece of tattered rope from her wrists. It had been so easy to abandon herself to anger, to survival. The Hunger paced within her, a caged beast, waiting for prey. She could barely think, let alone rein it in. “Hello? Na dan?” The boy called again, his voice rising in pitch. An-Yin, she told herself. An-Yin. Remember him. He who bears the ankh. She roused herself from her crouch and opened her lips to tell him—tell him what? It was hard to remember words, to fix them in her mind long enough to— And why struggle? This was her true nature. The Afya who remembered the names of prey, who talked to them, who denied herself, she was the freak. Now, to lure the boy—An-Yin, Sands damn it!—If she could lure An-Yin to open the door, she’d be quick to overwhelm him and— No! He can help us! She shook her head, thoughts fraying again.

At dusk, they transferred the body from the hall to the meadow outside the fortress. They walked in a long, somber procession. The household guards carried the pallet, then followed Sheng-Yin, An-Yin, and Rong. Behind them, An-Yin could sense the Seer’s presence, like an icy fire eating into his back. They hadn’t spoken since last night, and even as they reached their destination, he couldn’t think of what to say to her. Townspeople crowded in over the bridge, trampling the sparse grass into the mud. Their eyes rested on An-Yin: demanding, almost hungry.

The stalagnates are a cultural marvel and one held with pride by the dark elves. Another thing in common but yet very distinct is how most of the building are carved from the cave walls. What ever isn’t used is either taken by the U.C, traded, or recycled to towers. Each culture is distinct many share brutalist edges however unlike most brutalist builds or buildings in western civilization. Many are given a distinct pattern. This makes the buildings more welcoming without disturbing the caves' structural integrity. The brighter or more plentiful the colors the safer the area. Interestingly the inverse is also true many contain only one color and look to be one stone. Even the railings are carved from the same rock. These might contain a sliver or another plain color like blue as a primary and white as an outline or white and red. These designs inspire community, safety, and most importantly nationalism. One good way to enrage a Dark Elf is to claim that one city looks identical to another. The communities of the Dark Elves are stronger than most in the universe. Though in the age of the Kali Yuga that is contested.

She picked up the long, slender needle, threaded the narrow eyelet, and began counting out beads according to the diagram. She expertly slipped the beads beneath the loom, using the finger of her other hand to lift them against the threads so that each bead lay in its own lane, and with the other hand she threaded the needle into the beads and over each thread, coaxing it through the narrow holes. The rhythm steadied her thoughts—in, out, pull tight—a language of motion older than words.
