Japanese umbrellas, ‘wagasa’
Radiating an incandescent golden warmth against the night, a dense composition of illuminated Japanese oil-paper umbrellas (wagasa) presents a rhythmic study in translucent color and geometric line. Backlit from within, the delicate membranes of handmade washi paper project an amber, cream, and soft vermilion glow, revealing the fine structural skeleton of split bamboo ribs (hone) radiating systematically from central wooden shafts. Stenciled across the taut, pleated canopies are crisp floral motifs—most prominently stylized cherry blossoms (sakura) in deep crimson—running along the umbrella borders and upper domes. In the lower foreground, a parasol edged with a slender lime-green band introduces a subtle chromatic counterpoint, while the background dissolves into soft, honeyed bokeh and deep shadowy voids. Tracing their lineage back to early folding parasols imported from continental Asia during the Heian period and reaching their functional zenith during the Edo period, wagasa represent a masterclass in monozukuri (artisanal discipline). The creation of a single umbrella is an arduous, multi-stage craft requiring the synthesis of specialized trades: fashioning the flexible bamboo ribs, hand-stretching durable mulberry-fiber paper, applying natural vegetable oils (traditionally perilla or sesame) to achieve waterproofing, and sealing the wooden hub (atama) with protective lacquer (urushi). Beyond their historical utility as protection against rain and sun, wagasa maintain an enduring presence in Kabuki theater, traditional tea gatherings (nodate), and bridal processions. In contemporary culture, night illuminated displays (wagasa-akari) celebrate the unique way oiled washi transforms harsh, direct light into a soft, ambient radiance.

Two women navigate a glistening, rain-slicked stone alleyway in a historic district of Kyoto, Japan. Shielded by traditional oil-paper wagasa umbrellas, they bring the beauty of classic Japanese attire to life against the textured backdrop of old-world architecture.
This vertical black-and-white photograph captures a timeless scene in a historic district of Kyoto, Japan. Two women are seen from the front as they walk down a narrow, glistening stone alleyway, their figures partially obscured by large, traditional wagasa (oil-paper umbrellas). The rain-slicked cobblestones reflect the soft light, creating a textured, atmospheric quality that enhances the "old-world" feel of the architecture lining the path. Both women are dressed in classic Japanese attire, featuring: Kimono adorned with delicate patterns, including visible floral or bird-like motifs. Dark haori (traditional half-coats) worn over their kimono for protection against the cool, damp weather. White tabi socks and traditional footwear, navigating the wet stones with practiced grace. The composition is framed by overhanging willow branches at the top, adding a layer of depth and a sense of intimacy to the stroll. The choice of monochrome photography emphasizes the geometric lines of the umbrella ribs and the rhythmic patterns of the stone masonry. This image serves as a poetic tribute to the enduring elegance of Kyoto's cultural heritage, where traditional fashion and historical environments continue to coexist harmoniously.

Japanese umbrellas, Wagasa. Japan. Photography by Chajimori on Ganref
Wagasa Illuminated in the Night This striking nocturnal photograph captures a display of wagasa (traditional Japanese umbrellas) transformed into glowing sculptural lanterns. The composition is dominated by several large umbrellas made of translucent washi paper and bamboo ribs, which are backlit to reveal their delicate structural skeletons. A large, cream-colored umbrella in the foreground is the primary focus, its fine radial lines creating a mesmerizing geometric pattern. Surrounding it are other umbrellas in deep crimson and royal purple, their colors saturated and radiant against the pitch-black background. Below the hanging umbrellas, dozens of small bamboo candle holders are arranged on the ground, their warm light casting soft circular glows that mirror the circular forms above.

This iconic black-and-white photograph captures a woman in a traditional Japanese kimono walking through the snow while holding a wagasa (oil-paper umbrella). Photographer: Jiro Yabuzaki
A deeply atmospheric, high-contrast photograph capturing a figure walking through a heavy winter snowfall in what appears to be a historic Japanese district. The person is seen from the side, completely bundled in a dark, patterned winter kimono. They shield themselves from the cascading white flakes with a large, traditional oiled-paper parasol (wagasa) rendered in a deep purple or charcoal tone. In the background, a traditional wooden building features a dense vertical lattice wall partially dusted with white snow. A large, glowing oval paper lantern (chōchin) adorned with a dark, stylized floral crest hangs prominently from a wooden post, casting a soft warmth over the freezing, snow-covered ground below.

Als ich mit dem Bild fertig war, fiel mir die kleine Ähnlichkeit mit Miroku (Mönch aus dem Anime Inuyasha) auf. War aber keine Absicht 🙈

Traditional Japanese umbrella, Jurin-ji temple (十輪寺), Kyoto. Photography by Damien Douxchamps on Flickr.
Gazing upward from beneath the glowing canopy of a traditional oil-paper umbrella (wagasa), the viewer is enveloped in a sea of radiant, sun-drenched crimson. A precise radial matrix of fine, split-bamboo ribs radiates outward from a central spindle, woven with an intricate, geometric web of structural threadwork. Through the translucent, oiled washi paper, the dark silhouettes of leafy tree branches project like delicate ink brushstrokes against a glowing red sky. The scene evokes a rich, immersive sensory atmosphere: the warm, vermilion-tinted light filtering onto the face, the faint, earthy aroma of perilla oil and aged bamboo, the soft rustle of wind through temple trees overhead, and the deep, quiet sanctuary formed beneath the red dome. Captured within the tranquil grounds of Jurin-ji (十輪寺)—a historic Tendai temple in western Kyoto famously known as Narihira-dera after the celebrated Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira—this large outdoor umbrella (nodaigasa) traditionally shelters guests during open-air tea gatherings (nodate). The construction of a traditional wagasa represents one of Japan's most refined heritage crafts, where a single length of bamboo is meticulously split into dozens of flexible ribs, joined to a hand-carved wooden hub, and stretched with hand-poured mulberry paper sealed with natural vegetable oils. Every detail—from the structural tension of the bamboo frame to the delicate hand-strung thread reinforcement (kikyō-buki)—honors centuries of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for material), transforming a functional shade into a portable architectural sanctuary.
