#Wagonways
Cycling on the north east's wagonways continues to be a terrible experience in late spring.

It was the North Tyneside 12k Trail Race this morning. It’s a glorious route over and through beach, cliffs, denes and wagonways. It’s also not a run you should do hungover. I’m doing well to hide the suffering here at the 10k point. #running #runsky #runchat #ukrunchat

Wagonways, a fascinating way to move cargo long distances in societies without the state capacity to build canals, and the antecedent of modern maglev lines if you squint hard enough?

idle thoughts on saltriven, I think they probably did have trains pre-apocalypse, but that trains (like firearms) developed in weird ways that kinda make them less useful. I'm imagining the Vedron Empire had something resembling proper locomotives, but used mage-driven carts on wagonways for war

if we were embracing wagonways this would be much older than a 200 year anniversary! They’ve chosen their terms, and they are incorrect in them!

'I’m familiar with parts of this area from childhood walks and teenage escapades, but my eight mile circular route connects key historical sites and finishes at a pub with links back to the Napoleonic wars.' More like this, please.

And yet compared to many places Newcastle has an embarrassment of riches for cycling thanks to the wagonways and other similar paths.

I love the wagonways, but (admittedly) I use them for leisure.

They're not really suitable to be a day to day active travel route. Very few of them are lit, there's long stretches with no passive supervision.

And they don't really join kids homes to schools or shops, or the park.

Where horses were used on wagonways the ballast is high between the sleepers to protect the horses’ hooves. #archaeology #railway

The mines are long gone, but eight miles north of Durham city, relics of the north-east’s industrial heritage can be found hidden amid ancient woodland and a steep-sided gorge. #coal #NorthEastEngland #Beamish #mining

It's not too bad this morning as it's only my arms as I had a hat on, and although they're a little pink I was saved by a lot of the ride being on wagonways and covered by trees

In Apothecaria, the gripes between the elves and dwarves was started by horse-drawn wagonways that went from the mountains deep through forests on their way to harbor towns. The elves disliked the uprooting of trees to make ways for these early rails.

So the problem with London's railways starts with wagonways, which used railway tracks and were powered by horses or pulled by cables. Following the invention of the steam locomotive in the United Kingdom in 1802, trains rapidly spre

IRL, horse-drawn wagonways have been found as early as 600 B.C.E. So this feels like it has an early enough history that lines up with the feuding between dwarves and elves, and gives a reasonable causation for the fighting.

I'm obsessed with trains but in a less technical way. It lent well to caravans since the first "trains" ran on wagonways. Isn't that super fucking cool? We both kinda come together to nerd out about transportation but we also both really dislike cars.
