I've tried to explain to people that you don't want to go to destination restaurants here. You want the garlic chicken from the place near the police substation in Kalihi, or the oxtail soup from either that coffee shop on Kam Highway in Waimalu or the bowling alley in Aiea. Nobody gets it.

I took some vog portraits today.

This is looking west toward the Waiʻanae Range from Waimalu…mountains are almost invisible!

Also kept getting photobombed by feral invasive rose-ringed parakeets. There’s suddenly tons of them in the area.
Two rose-ringed parakeets fly toward the camera against a dingy grey sky. The air is extremely polluted with vog (volcanic smog). There is just barely a slight hint of mountains in the distance, with the bottom frame filled with hazy land then field lights and house roofs.

I've been trying to mimic my favorite Chinese food restaurant from Hawai'i (Waimalu Chop Suey) and I think I'm getting closer! This sauce had a little more kick and a little less sweet so I might up the mirin and drop the white pepper a little next time and that might do it
