Although it's feeling very autumnal, still some vestiges of summer on the limestone soils round Peterborough, with Common Calamint, Viper's-bugloss and Wild Thyme all still in flower this week on @wildlifebcn.org reserves

Some of my family is from Wansford: carpet weavers, then agricultural workers when the carpet mill closed. Some moved to Scarborough, some to Driffield, & gt-gt-granduncle Antiochus joined the Grenadier Guards & d. of TB in Croydon Barracks.

Wansford Mill and the adjoining Mill farmhouse occupy an quintessentially English, chocolate-box setting between the waters of the West Beck and the Driffield Navigation Canal. Opened in 1770, the navigation transformed the movement of agricultural goods from the Yorkshire Wolds,

In Peterborough, there were three bridges across the Nene between Wansford and the city centre and two were tolled. There was also a free ford. Far easier to walk down the bank to the ford!

It might have been Wansford station, as in Octopussy; that's a popular historic railway for filming. Anyway, I'll see if I can find a copy to check.

It’s apparently a direct to TV sequel and allegedly was filmed , in part, around Wansford. Based on some searching .. the other main 80s movie filmed there was Octopussy , but that’s not in any way helpful

Here are some photos taken at some point during the 1980s, probably towards the earlier end of that decade. They show filming in Wansford, England, for a production set in WW2 occupied France:

I wonder what the film is - does anyone recognise anything?

Dry spell drives water voles from East Yorkshire chalk stream
Water voles have disappeared from part of a chalk stream due to the dry weather, an expert has said. Matthew Arnold, from the East Yorkshire Rivers Trust, said streams fed by the Yorkshire Wolds were a "lifeline" for wildlife, but water levels were as low as he could remember. It meant voles were finding it harder to escape from predators in a section of the West Beck, at Wansford, near Driffield. East Yorkshire is not officially in drought, but recorded just 0.8mm of rainfall in July, a record low, according to the Met Office. Arnold said the long spell of dry weather was "really bad" for voles because holes in the bank, which the creatures use to hide from predators, had been exposed. "Water voles are adapted to escape from predators by basically coming out under the water and escaping across the river to another set of holes," he said. "They haven't got that at the moment because the levels are so low, so not only can their natural predators find them easier, but anything and everything can get down there. A stoat can follow them through, a weasel can follow them through. "I've not seen a water vole on...

I'd say the view from Wansford 'box is the most scenic in preservation. Do they allow you to take a quick paddle in the R. Nene between trains?!

2.. It seems incredible to think nowadays but the box controls the road crossing gates at Wansford which at one time was the main Great North Road before being bypassed in the 1950s to become what is now the A1 dual carriageway! 📸 25/5/26
