We're at COP30 with @gaiazerowaste.bsky.social to make the case that stopping waste methane is the quickest path to climate relief.

Over the first two days, @janekvahk.bsky.social has talked about data transparency at the WasteMAP event and organised the first ZWE event on bio-waste solutions 💪

Methan ist bis zu 80x klimaschädlicher als CO² und für ca. 30% des Klimawandels verantwortlich. Fast 20% der Methanemission verursacht der Abfallsektor. Maßgeblich Lebensmittelreste. (Quelle:

Live from London Climate Week where we participated in a LOW-M event about bringing data to finance. In our project with GMH we support waste methane mitigation using satellite data. The first data are now publicly available through WasteMAP, read all about it here: www.sron.nl/en/actueel/n....
New methane satellite data supporting waste emission mitigation now publicly available - SRON | Space Research Organisation Netherlands
Methane emissions from landfills are a key contributor to climate change. In the TWOS project, SRON works together with the Global Methane Hub, GHGSat, and local partners to support mitigation of those emissions using satellite data. The first data are now publicly available through the WasteMAP platform.

Webinar - From Space to Site: Empowering Localized Methane Action
Reducing methane emissions from the waste sector is a fast, cost-effective climate strategy - but local action is often hindered by limited actionable data and financial resources. By putting advanced tools such as the Waste Methane Assessment Platform (WasteMAP) directly into the hands of decision-makers, countries, cities, and development financiers can better prioritize resources, evaluate mitigation options, and establish credible monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. Together, these innovations strengthen the foundation for more transparent, effective, and equitable methane mitigation efforts worldwide.  Speakers from RMI, GMH, Carbon Mapper, and IDB led this webinar which presented new features on the Waste Methane Assessment Platform that help users explore new emissions data, and find out how data, technology, and finance are supporting local methane mitigation in the waste sector.  WasteMAP is continuously incorporating satellite-based methane observations to support transparency in emissions tracking. Recent advancements in high-resolution satellite technology, such as GHGSat and Planet’s Tanager-1 satellite, offer new opportunities to identify methane hotspots at the facility level, including landfills and dumpsites. This webinar included a deep dive into the latest satellite data with special guest Tia Scarpelli of Carbon Mapper.   Viewers also heard from Magda Carolina Correal of Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a key partner in advancing WasteMAP’s impact across Latin America and the Caribbean in scaling digital solutions for waste methane mitigation. IDB and RMI are among several organizations that co-signed the Joint Declaration on the Digital Transformation and Data Enhancement in Solid Waste and Circular Economy, which affirms a shared commitment to strengthening data systems, enabling digital innovation, and supporting open-access tools like WasteMAP to help achieve circular economy and climate goals across the region.  Backed by funders such as the Global Methane Hub and Google.org, WasteMAP bridges tech innovation with on-the-ground action, building capacity in underserved regions.
