Citizens do not exist to benefit the state

States are meant to benefit citizens

I think we’ve gotten this twisted

Beyond its famous preamble, the Declaration of Independence listed out a set of grievances against King George III of England.

Some of them sound quite familiar…

Kushner and Witkoff have everything covered. Keep things in the family.

reread the Declaration of Independence in advance of the Fourth of July, and the list of all the injuries that the British crown inflicted on the colonists straight up reads like Trump's to-do list

Whatever you think of the White House as a building or a symbol, the fact is that the image of it being torn apart on a whim two days after 7 million people hit the streets against autocracy is going to make a HUGE amount of people really, really angry, and that's an energy that should be harnessed.

So here's something everyone saying "just let him pay the troops" needs to consider.

Giving a President the ability to repurpose money meant for other things towards paying people means giving him the ability to repurpose money meant for paying people towards other things.
Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

The Supreme Court I got to know when I worked in the Solicitor General’s office understood its responsibility to balance the scales of justice in favor of the powerless. Today’s SCOTUS majority doesn’t seem to have a clue. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/does-the-supreme-court-exist-to-protect

Murphy: “ppl now see Trump for who he is — a would be dictator who doesn’t care what Americans think, cares nothing about our Constitution or our laws, & sees himself as a kind of 18th century king, with unlimited power to drag all of us into disastrous wars overseas without the consent of the ppl”

A massive regressive national sales tax imposed upon every American by a president with no constitutional authority to impose a national sales tax. The reason why the founders gave this power to Congress is because this would never pass any Congress- even this one.
