Everything is connected. The people suffering the most from wildfire smoke are homeless. Next, still housed people who can't afford to weatherize. In the heat, people without or who can't afford to run AC so they simply keep the windows open and pray. Universal and free electricity is a necessity.

we have a lot of old houses to weatherize, and that’s important, but imo if you’re arguing against heat pumps because they might give more people access to a/c, you may find yourself arguing against climate scientists

The ensuing media circus traditionally includes blaming renewables, obfuscating the failures of gas providers, politicians making lots of stern noise about never letting it happen again, but not actually forcing gas companies to weatherize and never clawing back the $billions in ill-gotten profits.

Plus you had a grid that they won’t pay to weatherize or stop from failing during winter storms that are more frequently severe thanks to Arctic warming. It’s just a mess. I hate it. People used to have a modicum of sense; now everyone is a reactionary idiot.

I think trimet should get as much money as it needs to (a) reevaluate what 99th percentile extreme weather looks like over the next 50 years and (b) weatherize our system appropriately to keep buses and trains running during those events

offsets are bullshit - but the last time I flew, I donated to the Finger Lakes Climate Fund
they help low/moderate income people weatherize their houses and switch from fossil heat to heat pumps
I’d rather have a zero carbon way to travel, but at least the decarb work is real
