Microsoft's Webwright: Playwright for AI Agent CLI?

Webwright gives LLM a terminal where it can launch multiple browser sessions to inspect the page and complete a web task. It captures and inspects page screenshots/states only when needed.

It enforces each web task to be completed end-to-end within a re-runnable Python script, i.e. your web agent browsing history is a single code file. No multi-agent system, no graph engine, no plugin layer, no hidden orchestration — just a terminal, a browser, and a model

The Webwright write up is great. Talks up very signficiant wins for #CodeMode agenting; the ability to issue multiple steps at once seems like a very big win! And everything is written down in the end!

Microsoft Research's Webwright flips the web agent paradigm: instead of predicting clicks, it writes code. Success rates on long-horizon tasks jump from 33% to 60%, and the output is a reusable CLI tool, not an ephemeral trace.

¡Microsoft acaba de hacer de código abierto Webright!
Una skill para agentes de IA para controlar navegadores.

El truco es que por debajo usa Playwright, escribe el código al vuelo y el rendimiento es brutal.

Gonna confess I hadn't turned playwright MCP on for a while, until recently. Config had changed significantly underfoot.

Definitely down for trying webwright!

Tested Microsoft's 𝚆𝚎𝚋𝚠𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝 on three scraping sites this week — an agent that writes Playwright code instead of clicking through pages.

On the JS-rendered site, I told it to expect 40 rows from 2 pages, based on the first site's page count.

Really digging more #CodeMode approaches over MCP. Expose CLI tools & let the AI at that: it sometimes can write badass scripts.

The recent Webwright wrapper around playwright for example shows some major benchmark wins, and way less round trips.

headless chrome inside a sandboxed coding agent is genuinely painful. my current hack: leave playwright MCP running on :8931 outside the sandbox and tell claude to always talk to it. mostly works, until chrome zombies eat all 64GB on the M4. eyeing webwright and obra/superpowers-chrome as lighter

Webwright: Why AI Web Agents Should Write Code, Not Click
For years, web agents have worked one click at a time—and often fallen apart on long tasks. Microsoft Research’s Webwright makes a different bet: give the model a terminal and let it write the program instead. On long-horizon tasks, the same GPT-5.4 model jumps from 33.5% to 60.1% success. And instead of leaving behind a click trace, it leaves something you can actually use again: a command-line tool.

The bigger number behind it: same GPT-5.4 model, same task, just swap clicking for code-writing, and long-task success jumps from 𝟑𝟑.𝟓% 𝐭𝐨 𝟔𝟎.𝟏% on Microsoft's Odysseys benchmark. Wrote up the full test on @towardsdatascience.com
