A pot hole on top of Grand Mesa, near Grand Junction, bordering the Grand River (the Colorado River) in Mesa County, Colorado. To be honest, there are lots of mesas in Mesa County.
A pothole full of snow melt and rainwater reflects the sky in a rocky flat on top of Grand Mesa. The sky is blue with fluffy clouds. The pothole is bordered by a tree and a few granite boulders. You can see clumps of evergreens in the distance, and a densely wooded area at the horizon. The Grand Mesa has a very flat mountaintop which used to be a valley. Volcanic flows covered the valley, and as erosion occurred, the Mesa too gradually grew above what is now the valley of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. This is called a topographic inversion, when what was once the lowest point in an area becomes the highest.

Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, is a great place to visit. These are the Anasazi cliff dwellings that one can walk through. Then there is a sample of their pictography. Walking around on the mesa itself you can see other village sites.

Anasazi cliff dwellings are nestled under a large cliff wall overhang protecting it from the heat of the sun and probably bad weather. There are several buildings you can walk through on a guided tour. There are cottonwood trees and gambel oak at the front o the walkway. A small sampling of the intriguing pictographs that adorn the cliff walls. Thy are engraved in the sandstone and have several human hands carved in, as well as mountain sheep and what look like lizards.

Looking at the rim of the Black Canyon, you can see the deep narrow cleft in the dark rocks and abundant shrubs and small trees lining the edges. Down below, the Gunnison River continues its job carving through the rocks. "About 60 million years ago, a small area of land uplifted and brought 1.8 billion year old metamorphic rock to high elevations. This is called the Gunnison Uplift. About 30 million years ago, large volcanoes erupted on either side of this uplift, burying it in volcanic rock. Then, as early as two million years ago, the Gunnison River began flowing in force. The river and time eroded all of the volcanic rock and cut a deep canyon in the metamorphic rock below. What you see today is a deep, steep, and narrow canyon: the Black Canyon of the Gunnison." National Park Service info Another view of the dark rocks, varying in shade from brown to black, makes the viewer inch back cautiously from the precipitous edge Pinyon pine and juniper are the dominant trees in the area, and are fairly short due to the dry climate . This photo of a growing pinyon cone shows the promise of a good crop year. A couple of brilliant scarlet claret cup cactus flowers look like they're peeking over the edge of the canyon
