#WetLab
No AI and no AI-directed wetlab that is anticipated in the reasonably foreseeable future can do the kind of exploratory membrane reconstitution biochemistrymy lab is doing.

My colleagues may or may not think we're asking the most important questions but they are questions that AI *cannot* answer.
one reason people who do wet lab/medical work are going to be gainfully employed for a long time to come

Ant has their own wetlab now, so Claude can skip the middleman.

#AI #Hype Anthropic hooks its computer system up to a wetlab what could go wrong?
Anthropic employees: NEXT-GEN AI COULD WIPE OUT HUMANITY WITH A SUPERVIRUS!

Normies: that seems like a big leap. How would this AI disseminate such a virus in the real world?

Anthropic employees: oh, through the wet labs we built and hooked it up to, of course.

Normies: …😬😤

Information-dense synthesis has not yet been validated in the wetlab, but the synthesis robots are already running. It is also yet to be scaled to bigger state-spaces, such as full-length proteins. Doing so will require further accelerating Bayesian experimental design.

get in the fucking wetlab, shinji

it's an initiative with many teams across the world to sequence things more strategically, sharing wetlab and drylab methods or expertise, there was a recent method we published that is being tested across diff projects in the initiative for room temp sample shipment bsky.app/profile/ebpg...
❄️🧬 Can we generate high-quality reference genomes without the cold chain?

A new study suggests the answer is yes. DNA preserved at room temperature for up to one week produced chromosome-scale reference genomes.

Suppose in three years Claude is as good at "biotech" as it is at coding. Further suppose part of the training runs involve hooking Claude up to an automated wetlab (I'm not sure if these exist yet, but people are definitely working on them).

More wetlab for everyone!

Two preprints both out today identifying *different* reverse transcriptase systems associated with arrays reminiscent of CRISPR/Cas, encoded by different phage.

One from Anthropic and one from Stanford. Worth pointing out that the Stanford work clearly began earlier, and has more wetlab follow-up:
Many important bacterial non-coding RNAs and structural elements remain undiscovered. To help, David Li, Garyk Brixi, Michael Fischbach, @brianhie.bsky.social & team introduce Minerva, which uses a genome language model to predict RNA base pairing, repeats, & other interactions from sequence alone.

Fact that OpenAI had to use $15 million to solve Navier-Stokes is significant enough that I don't expect just mere users stumbling on those just yet.

This is probably same reason Anthropic started its own bio wetlab, so they do it themselves. Ideally they'd like someone outside doing that part.

AI is conducting biological research in a wetlab? Cool. Would it mind holding off on the antibiotic-resistant apocalypse until there’s something in Broadcast magazine that I can show my Dad and get a ‘Well done, Ed.’

From my very cursory reading I don't think they did any wetlab stuff which is the acid test of this sort of thing - you can hang any neat explanation you want around sequence data, but you have to show it does things!

you cannot be the ceo of a company begging for a slow down and asking for independent oversight then opening a wetlab - even if it isn’t one, it looks like one!! - that you won’t even talk about what you’re doing in but then expect me to take you seriously
September 23, 2026 at 1:08 AM
yea if they announced which projects they were working on and had live feeds or something, like trailcams for the anthropic wetlab to ensure its only mythos working on cancer cures, I’d be so much more sympathetic

My memory:

~”See Marge, you said I couldn’t put my arm in the cotton candy machine!”
~”I didn’t say you couldn’t, I said you shouldn’t.”

I’m with Marge on this one. At least for today. Hooking it up to a wetlab with the present obs infrastructure is a bit outside my risk appetite?

You?

I guess where I diverge is around who is incentives of people involved and the pace of progress.

If AI were being developed in some gov't lab, fears would be easier to dismiss.

But when we see things like Anthropic's wetlab announcement, why should we assume every one involved is responsible?

My main take-away was that we should watch lab automation much more.

The recent news of Anthropic setting up a wetlab is both interesting and mildly concerning. While it might be more about the scientific output side, I expect we will see a boom in lab automation.

EXCLUSIVE: Anthropic quietly sets up biology lab as it ramps AI drug program
At a time when fears of AI are gripping the public, the startup has built a wet lab — or place for physical experiments — in the San Francisco Bay Area, two people familiar with the matter said.

I think it might actually be 4) you need a good guy with a wetlab to stop a bad guy with a wetlab

Still seems like a bad idea though!

pretty funny how people are freaking about the Claude wetlab when all they are gonna do is some pretty useless Comp Bio cataloguing
September 19, 2026 at 3:49 PM
When a random biomedicine startup uses machine learning I sleep because that has a chance at finding useful things.

When a leading lab whose entire blueprint is building towards AGI rather than specialized tools gets a wetlab it just screams "we want to hand our child nukes to rule the world."

Anthropic just opened a wet‑lab for AI biology, teaming up with Coefficient Bio to push drug discovery. Dario Amodei says the next wave of life‑sciences breakthroughs will come from this hybrid lab. Curious? Dive in! #AnthropicAI #WetLab #DrugDiscovery
