I conceded that I complained too often about our fallen world. It had always been falling and we had to make a life.

A word of explanation: this skeet from a couple of days back wasn't intended as a knock on #WhatWeCanKnow by #IanMcEwan. Instead, it was a reference to a key aspect of the novel, but phrased in a rather cryptic way to avoid spoilers. For the record, it's a very good book that is still echoing ... 🧵
Just finished What We Can Know by #IanMcEwan. Apparently the answer is not very much …

In #WhatWeCanKnow, the futuristic book by @IanMcEwan he writes of "a crisis in realism in fiction between 2015 + 2030..when...new forms were needed to frame the physical + moral consequences of a global catastrophe". I think he's on to something. #Fantasy #writingcommunity #books

#IanMcEwan’s waterworld

#WhatWeCanKnow is a satirical vision of a future flooded Britain – and a gripping story of marital duty and guilt

Coming 9/16/25 🪞✨

From the bestselling author of Atonement, Ian McEwan's WHAT WE CAN KNOW is a literary detective story which reclaims the present from our sense of looming catastrophe and imagines a future world where all is not quite lost.

I just read #WhatWeCanKnow by #IanMcEwan, the #Colbert Late Show Book Club selection for October 2025.

Though I found the characters’ lives over-the-top, the mystery of the lost poem and the lessons of historical correlation & conjecture are fascinating.

She had read too much. Everything was like something else.
So writes #IanMcEwan I’ve read all his novels. The latest #WhatWeCanKnow is like nothing else I’ve read. Love, writing (poetry, biography, journals) sex, academia, the future, climate tragedy. Fascinating. #amreading

#WhatWeCanKnow is a genre-blurring novel from #IanMcEwan. Part literary detective story, part philosophical exploration, it is full of secrets, twists, and unexpected revelations. Kirkus calls it “a philosophically charged tour de force by one of the best living novelists in English.” (4/5)

Oh, how I loved this book. Looking back at our current times from one hundred years hence, it exposes our willful ignorance of climate change while following timeless love stories through a lost poem. Brilliant. #whatwecanknow

I still hesitate and steel myself when approaching a new McEwan - I'm still scarred in my heart and soul over what he did to me with Atonement (IYKYK...), and there's hints extant this takes a twist in its second half.
You better be careful with me, Ian.
