@SundayLifeMag - if you're going to do #WhatWomenWant stats don't be so lazy: <a href="http://www.superlinguo.com/post/35940847172/what-women-dont-want-bad-stats" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky">http://www.superlinguo.com/post/35940847172/what-women-dont-want-bad-stats (L) (cc @JointDestroyer @jevoislafemme)
What women don’t want - bad stats
I’m not normally inspired to fire up the computer for a weekend rant, and I usually take the vacuousness of the weekend newspaper glossy supplements with a grain of salt (and some eggs on toast). Today’s “Sunday Life” special on “What women Want” riled me up enough to stop me enjoying my usually relaxed Sunday breakfast. The premise is that in a series of thematic Sunday Life tells women what they want, based on survey data. Golden truths like “only one in four [women] considers herself to be at her ideal weight” and “83% [of women] exercise at least once a week.” It’s interview data, so it must be reliable right? These are hard facts!  One of the reasons I’ve loved doing linguistics is that it’s given me a lot of other skills; and being stats-savvy is one of them. I can’t see any value in any of the results in these articles, and this is because they’re not telling us what men want. To really figure out whatwomenwant, independent of what everyone wants, you have to interview an equal number of men and women (in a similar distribution of age/education etc.). Then you run tests to make sure that there is a statistical difference between the answers given by men and women. If only 1 in 4 men also consider themselves an ideal weight then these stats don’t really tell us anything about women, they just tell us that all people think themselves a non-idealistic weight (and maybe there is a more interesting story to be had there, like whether men and women have different ideas about what constitutes ideal body weight). These stats aren’t that difficult (the fact that I know about them is enough evidence of that). Most of the tension that has resulted in this year’s skirmishes in the ‘gender wars’ comes from the fact that people try and presume a one-size-fits all approach to gender (and ergo feminism and misogyny). But things are more complicated than that. Assuming that all women want the same thing because we are women, and that we therefore want something different to what men want, is lazy at best and insulting at worst. What does this woman want? For people to stop insulting me with their lazy approaches to gender… and statistics.
