The American Black Currant has smooth, small, and reddish-purple to black berries. Gooseberries and currants are both in the "Ribes" genus, but to see the difference, look if there are spines, thorns, or prickles. If so, it’s a gooseberry, but if not, then it's a currant! #WildflowerWednesday

Three bees, one flower.

Somewhat unusual, as the bees usually battle over the flowers. Today I saw multiple huddled together on several flowers. Maybe it was related to the extreme heat? I think they are all ladies, a male tried to disturb them a bit later.

The #thistles at Bombay Hook NWR are a heaven for all the little buzzers, buzzing around them. And I got lucky with some unoccupied blooms.

The young leaves of the Peach-leaved Willow are sparsely covered in crinkly hairs, but with age, they become almost completely hairless. Female and male flowers are found on separate plants, and the trees grow best in moist environments, like marshes, and lake and river shores. #WildflowerWednesday

It's #WildflowerWednesday! 🌼This week, we're showcasing the Hawaiian Poppy (Argemone glauca). Hawaiian Poppies are native perennials on all the Hawaiian Islands. This flower grows rapidly in disturbed areas, making it a particularly stable native species.

The Autumn Willow is one of many willow species that call Manitoba home. They typically grow in moist soils and along shores. These plants are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. The flowers grow in spike-like clusters called catkins. #WildflowerWednesday
