A weevil at Wildsumaco in Ecuador. Easily found by following the trail of glitter he leaves behind everywhere he goes.

But really- this glitter weevil is always amazing to see and a real wonder of the world. Endless forms most beautiful, indeed.

Wire-crested thorntail from Wildsumaco lodge near Pacto Sumaco, Ecuador. One of my favorite lodges on my trips to South America. Internet access is unique. #birds #birding #nature #photography #ecuador

!. Look at this astonishing animal. My velvet worm friend lives on moss in the rainforest. He is ANCIENT. WAY older than dinosaurs, lobopods like him even make an appearance in the Cambrian- when multicellular life became trendy.

You can find him today on a tree at Wildsumaco, in Ecuador :)

Found at Wildsumaco in Ecuador. Take a closer look at this weevil. How long do you think it’s been dead?

One of the animals I was excited to find in my recent visit to Ecuador is this velvet worm from WildSumaco (Oroperipatus sp., possibly undescribed). At this point I've seen so many velvet worms in my travels that I can say I have favorites. Oroperipatus will always have a special place in my heart.

I see some people posting their strawberry moon photos from last night, so here is my humble contribution. Micrathena clypeata, sometimes referred to as the strawberry spider, is seen here spinning her moon-like egg sac.

This is one of the photos from WildSumaco that I am most proud of.

Let me introduce you to Pintalia constellaris, a cixiid planthopper that I've been trying to find for years. Why? It mimics a jumping spider, but you might need to squint your eyes a little to see it. Despite its wide distribution in Latin America, I found it only recently in WildSumaco, Ecuador.

A portrait of the charismatic Crayola Katydid (Moncheca sp) hanging out at Wildsumaco in Ecuador. Having held SO many similar (Copiphorini) katydids, it’s jarring to be met with these bright, in your face colors. Other than being purple this guy, and his green relatives, are excellent grass mimics

A lichen mimic katydid at Wildsumaco in Ecuador. These absolutely disappear into this beard lichen. Finding one was mostly a happy accident.

Its neat to think about the selective pressure that lead to them looking just like this lichen, that they both live around and eat as their main diet.

Here is a cute male orchid bee that I encountered in the magical place that is WildSumaco Biological Station. Fortunately I was able to enough detailed photos to ID it as Euglossa cybelia. This one is not just blue-green but also has beautiful purple undertones, especially when viewed from above.
