Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is celebrating birds with the #BestBeaks! I love the long needle bill of Jacamars, a male Coppery-chested (Galbula pastazae) in this case. WildSumaco Lodge, Guamani, Ecuador, June 2026.

The Rufous-tailed Jacamars have been getting frisky over the last week, chasing each other around the forest near the house. Are baby jacamars in my future? I can't wait!

I'm spending the next week in the jungle, in Magdalena department in Colombia.

There are some birds here.

Just back from Tobago. The bird life is pretty spectacular. Here's some Rufous Tailed Jacamars. The locals call them Jack 'ammers which is a good way of remembering them. There's quite a few birds with rufous in their names. It simply means reddy brown.

Ah, jacamars. Such amazing birds with so much character. This was my amigo, a male at @tapirvalley.bsky.social that didn't mind hanging out with me in the forest.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #BirdInABush; any bird in a hedge or bush, here is a male Coppery-chested Jacamar (Galbula pastazae) tossing a wasp in the air. Via Pacto Sumaco, Guamani, Napo, Ecuador, June 2026.

These birds are close relatives.

The elegant jewels perched delicately on a vine are rufous-tailed jacamars.

The guy who looks like he's suffering from a hangover after a night that definitely involved cigarettes is a russet-throated puffbird.

Jacamars and puffbirds make up the suborder Galbuli.

An alert, male Rufous-tailed Jacamar at @tapirvalley.bsky.social

These jacamars are sit-and-wait predators. They scan the area with their incredible vision and catch dragonflies, bees, and butterflies out of the air.

Got your mtDNA! Mitochondrial capture in Amazonian Jacamars
A case of mitochondrial capture in jacamars. I guess you have probably heard the phrase ‘Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell.’ And indeed they are, these small organelles genera…

Male Rufous-tailed Jacamar on the hunt at @tapirvalley.bsky.social

Related to woodpeckers (but behaving like flycatchers), jacamars are remarkable hunters of insects on the wing in the dark forest.

While typically elusive, I've been lucky to find cooperative photo subjects.

closer to puffbirds and woodpeckers. They have zygodactyl feet, in which two toes point forward and the other two toes backwards. Jacamars are insectivores but will also dine on spiders & small lizards, and the GRJA is the largest one by far; this #bird measures a foot long from tail to beak.

Keeping up a 2-year tradition of buying a random bird-themed book from Canada’s best used book store (the Book Shop in Penticton) for Christmas reading. This one had nothing to do with real jacamars but was a great romp of a read!

Yes, they catch bees and other flying insects, kind of like jacamars (yay, convergent evolution!)

Birds are odd because they can eat things that are very problematic for mammals. I've watched trogons eating extremely venomous caterpillars with no ill effects.

Jacamars are actually in the same order with woodpeckers and puffbirds, Piciformes.

I'm really excited to see what kinds of collaborations are going to be born in this extraordinary place.

We have fiction writers, ornithologists, designers, librarians, researchers, artists & coders in the group. From the US, Europe and Colombia.

There are still 3 spots left. Maybe you'll join us?

Thanks! Jacamars do this a bunch and I have captured it a few times, but I think this is my best yet.

The jacamars seem to be enjoying the forest around the house. This is the first time I've seen them nesting here and I hope they stay.
