#WinVICE
#C64 in NTSC and in PAL configs. Obviously, I am used to the PAL. Am I correct in thinking for 4 colours (1 background?) you have to have 8px [high] by 4 (double)px [wide]? I guess it just looks less "wide" on the NTSC, obviously. #Commodore64

What's this? He's got his own starring antagonist spot in a 1984 #C64 game..? He the "Fuzzbomb" and he will bring CHAOS to all that he encounters! This has been sat in my #WinVICE Games folder for years. What a lovely thing it is.

Following my thread yesterday, this is believed to be the first cassette loader game for the Commodore 64 - Sssnake, which was on Century Software's Skyline Attack game releaed in 1984, and used Novaload. I did a quick capture in WinVICE below so you can see it in action.

The title screen and in-game music is one unbroken 30-minute long track by Willy Beben. By far the longest single pieces of C64 music I've ever heard. Really compliments the overall vibes.

Alas, with its flickery, stuttery tile animation, the gameplay of this version of Tetris is so-so.
Commodore 64, Tetris music
The Tetris music from the C64 Tetris game (SID musician: Wally Beben), recorded on a real C64. I converted the SID file to a CRT file ( http://www.frank-buss.de/c64/tetris.zip ), and then played it with my DIY cartridge ( http://www.ohwr.org/projects/c64cartridge/wiki ) on a C64. You can download the original game from http://tinyurl.com/tetris-c64 and then play it with WinVICE, which of course, doesn't sound as good as on the real C64.

What was interesting was booting my WinVICE up into NTSC mode (to load in the US-only loading pic), it just looks so flippin' weird, man. But, absolutely less "horizontal". Has anyone done a proper deep dive into NTSC vs PAL? @pacbilly.bsky.social ..? @martinpiper.bsky.social @fuzzweed.co.uk

But: If you play C64 games today on an emulator - such as WinVice - you can manually "squeeze" the side borders closer... to more accurately simulate the original arcade experience:

Calling all Image BBS SysOp's, uploading issues in Image BBS v3.0 looks to be improving! Check out Bucko's update on the modified WinVice patch that seems to be helping a lot.

Is it possible a default setting switched from Positional to Symbolic or the other way around?

Also WinVICE no longer exists in newer versions, so if you're going from WinVICE to GTK3 VICE or SDL VICE, that could explain differences.

You know you can do all of this on a PC running WinVICE, right? You don't need to spend several $100 just to have a hunk of plastic and silicon dedicated to doing the same thing can already do for free.

I just don't get the point of the hardware now, when you can do everything it can do with WinVICE and your already existing PC.

I loved my C64/C128/64C, but I'm not gonna pay $300-$500 to replay 1980s C64 games that I can already play for free on my emulation suite.
