Microsoft has announced official Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) support for Fedora Linux, starting with Fedora 42, enabling direct installation via command line.

After years of work, Microsoft has made the WSL code publicly available. Yes, Windows Subsystem for Linux is now officially Open Source!

The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a set of software tools that basically lets you install and run native Linux applications on a Windows PC without rebooting into a different operating system. You can basically install a Linux distro inside Windows and use it to run Linux apps almost as if they were native Windows applications. More than nine years after releasing the first version of WSL, Microsoft has open sourced most of the WSL code.

Arch Linux now has an official image for Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). You can run Arch Linux directly from Windows 10 and 11 systems.

While this patch brings greater stability, it also saw an upgrade to cgroup v2, breaking backward compatibility with some workloads.
