FIDH welcomes the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Navi Pillay, a fearless advocate for human rights and international justice - Fédération internationale

From her fight against apartheid in South Africa to serving as a judge at international courts, and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Pillay has played a leading role in advancing justice for victims of grave human rights violations. Her career reflects an unwavering commitment to equality, the rule of law, and the fight against impunity. In 1992, she co-founded Equality Now, an international organisation dedicated to advancing women’s rights and challenging discriminatory laws. Her contribution to international justice has been equally significant. As a judge and later President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), she served on the Trial Chamber that delivered the landmark 1998 Akayesu judgment, which established that rape and other forms of sexual violence can constitute acts of genocide. She was later elected as one of the inaugural judges at the International...
