The wellbeing survey has 40 questions. "Is this workload achievable?" somehow didn't make the cut. Excellent coverage of everything around the problem.

Stress rarely announces itself.
Look for: dips in productivity, last-minute absence, mood changes, withdrawal, trouble focusing.
The best thing a manager can do? Make it safe to speak up.
Would your team tell you they’re struggling?

How are you doing - really?
Four words. Said well, they can do more than any wellness webinar.
Ask it one-to-one. Then stop talking... the pause is doing the work. Be ready for the real answer.
It's a door, not a box to tick.

Stop measuring applause. Start measuring action.

Applause is nice. Action is better. If people can't name one thing they're doing differently after your wellbeing initiative, it's time to rethink how you're measuring success.

What changed after everyone went home?

People can enjoy a workshop and still return to the same unmanageable demands. Measure the practical difference, not simply the number of chairs filled. Training should change something.

Many organisations measure stress once a year, with a survey. That is a snapshot, not a pattern.

HSE puts stress, depression and anxiety at 52% of work-related ill health in Great Britain.

Early information makes early action possible.

Attendance measures presence, not progress.

A packed room looks impressive in a report. It doesn't prove anyone left better equipped to cope with pressure. Ask what people tried, what helped and what changed at work.

A full workshop isn't proof of impact.

It's great when people turn up. But what could they actually use when Tuesday got difficult? Attendance is a starting measure. Changed behaviour is what matters.

Real change doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s built through compassion, commitment & conversation. Working in partnership we can create safer, kinder workplaces where work is good for workers’ mental health.

Five doors at work: criticise, gossip, get involved, encourage, help. The criticism queue runs off the page. At the help door? One person, nobody behind them. Why? Catherine Eadie on what’s going on:
