An intricate entrance gate

North in Cambodia lays the levelled temple complex of Preah Vihear.
Art details in the ornamentation on this temple is stunning.

Preah Vihear is the 2nd Cambodian Angkor World Cultural Heritage.

I saw the Buddha in the stone

The heritage from the old capital city of Chenla is still visible in the Kampong Thom area.

Like the art of great stonework. It is still kept in high regard in the modern day just south of city.

Early morning at a very ancient khmer temple Ak Yum

Situated on the south bank of West Baray, you look down on the oldest surviving temple mountain in Southeast Asia.

Older than the Angkor empire.

A midway surprise Prasat Rorng Ramong

This small temple is by the main road between Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom.

It is significant because it gives a good idea of how these early temples was build into the Angkor structure.

It leads into a room with an altar and small guard statues. The three other walls are partly fallen down. The top of the temple tower is lost. The temple is made of red laterite stone. It was once probably three towers in this 1100 year old temple, but to the north of this there are some remains of a platform and gate lintel. The third tower is probably long gone. Around the platform there are remains of a Yoni basin, and some stone art. The open area is covered by dirt and fallen leaves, and is flanked by green forest. In the background the main road between Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom is visible. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Temple spot was in use in the 900s. Current single tower was built after 1200, in use well after the Empire.

That morning I caught some warm sun rays at Prasat Kravan.

This five tower temple was built at the same time as the pyramid at Koh Ker, and gives a glimpse into the earliest city and capital sites of the Khmer Empire.

The mini citadel temple

The temple complex of Prasat Banteay Chhmar is one of the largest and least known Khmer Empire building works from the 1200s CE.

This is a cleared covered walkway from the west entrance.

Old steps at Preah Vihear

There is steep stairs to enter the first Gopura.

The main steps are large and old stone fitted together for a thousand years.

Rest of the temple is level, stretching to a fantastic view to its home north in Cambodia.

Common heritage framed by trees and jungle, the Sâmbor Prey Kŭh temples of pre-Angkor Chenla kingdom was added to our common World Cultural Heritage in 2017.

The Chenla kingdom bridges the earlier Funan Kingdom with the rise of the Khmer Empire.
