"Dr. Kobak and his team calculate that at least 13.5 percent of all biomedical abstracts appeared to have been written with the help of chatbots."
Not so surprising, given tools like Writefull (now integrated into Overleaf) that are explicitly marketed to scientists for this purpose.

Now it has built-in 'AI assistance' that sends your draft papers to a third-party LLM. It also means that it shills for the product from right within the editor.

Even better: apparently I had my "quota reached" for this AI feature called "Writefull" in Overleaf.
I still saw absolutely nothing about what it does.
Just an example of a feature that has no visible value to me, or is just not thought through IMO

Just when I figured out how to disable Word's Copilot, I went to reply to an email in Gmail and Gemini appeared. This combined with Adobe's AI Assistant and Overleaf's Writefull is overwhelming and distracting, at least for me. *gets off soapbox*

To overleaf and writefull specifically: writefull says their in-house model is a small LM, and tho I haven't seen numbers, if we believe that claim it may avoid many of the harms. But many parts of their product explicitly outsource to OpenAI's LLMs

I keep getting a banner for 10% off a Writefull subscription on the home page and I have a Writefull logo in the Overleaf text editor conveniently placed next to all of the features you actually want :(
