#OTD On October 8, 1944, British forces secured Corinth and the island of Samos as German troops retreated from Greece. Simultaneously, the No. 9 Commando landed at Nafplio, successfully clearing the Peloponnese and setting the stage for the liberation of Athens days later.

#OTD On October 8, 1943, the British 8th Army captured Larino and Guglionesi along the Biferno River. Meanwhile, the US 5th Army reached the Volturno Line, completing its advance and planning a major assault against the German defenses for October 12.

Which means that he can get people to invest in his movies and people to watch his movies and that's annoying when his movies are always just somehow... wrong. It is offensive to rewrite the history of horrific mass murder the way Tarantino has for WWII and the Manson killings.

But it's pretty easy to understand who's running the media and AI for that matter. Because when you ask the question how many Germans were actually in the Nazi party...,,? The Gemini. It comes back with
How many people were killed. 🙄

Most estimates place the total number of deaths during the Second World War at around 70-85 million people. Approximately 17 million of these deaths (20-25 percent of the total) were due to crimes aga...

I would argue that St Louis started French, turned Southern during the steamboat days, then flipped to Midwestern due to German and Irish immigration in the late 19th century. It has been sliding back to the South since after WWII. At this point most of Missouri feels like Arkansas to me.

Oh my! I know Grandpa Brown got a refrigerator in anticipation of the Rural Electrification Project, but funding got stopped by WWII, so the fridge stayed in his barn for the duration.

All was electrified by the time my Boomer sibs and I came along.

#OTD On October 8, 1939, Germany and the USSR partitioned Poland. Germany annexed western areas and set up the General Government, while the Soviets integrated eastern lands. In response, Poles formed the Underground State and the Armed Forces in the West to fight on.

1) I think your read on the 80s is broadly correct, but we're now at a time when the 1984 election (which I suspect lives on as a cautionary tale to every Dem who is old enough to remember it) is about far back in the past as WWII was to the NES' debut.

The WWII mentality was to fight fascism.

And here's chapter 6, where the idea for these chapter memes came from in the first place. This is the chapter on neoliberalism and the Chicago Boys in Chile - Schultz moved to Chicago from Iowa State in part due to an academic freedom issue with the butter lobby during WWII

Firing squads?

If America is wedded to state executions, maybe it's time to resurrect the only surefire humane method of execution, the one promoted by Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin.

Trump approved the military's 1st firing squad execution since WWII. Why now?
The Pentagon says Nidal Hasan will be executed by firing squad in December at Fort Hood, where he killed 13 people in 2009. The announcement came days after a botched lethal injection in Tennessee.

3. WWII
4. Spanish war
5. Korean War
6. VN war
7. Afghanistan war
8. Iran war

War is pointless. With the notable exception of WWII, America, for all its investments in the trappings of war, sucks at it. Not the military breaking shot part, that America is expert at. But, the political/diplomatic part where it’s time to call a close to childish endeavors.

Feeding the crew of an aircraft carrier is not historic. It's happened since WWII.

And Hitler, and concentration camps. My Uncle Daniel took photos that are in the Tower in the Holocaust Museum in DC. He never spoke of what he saw. In WWII he rode a motorcycle across the Pyrenees mountains, delivering mail to the troops, one of the few to carry their own camera.

to the extent this involves any thinking instead of being a (badly written) money grab attempt, they have an institutional pathology about the early days of Korea and to a lesser extent the Philippines in WWII
